Winter Tires

I want some winter tires for my P5 because the stock tires are pretty bad in the winter and my stock tires are on the brink of death.

What tires do you recommend? I am looking for a tire on the cheaper side but decent. I want a tire that can fit my stock rims.

Is it ok to use the stock rims with winter tires? I always see people around Calgary with steelies. I would rather keep my stock rims on in the winter because I am getting 17" rims in the spring. (Hopefully).

Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSI's - Nokian's latest snow tire offering to replacement the amazing Hakkapeliitta Q's that I have on my car. Excellent winter tire with decent wear on dry pavement compared to most other snow tires. Kal Tire has a sale on them until early November.

Try the Canadian Tire Brand - a buddy of mine that works in their purchasing department in Toronto said that those are from Michelin. Their prices are a lot lower than the brand name tires.

Hopefully they have a size that fits the P5.

i would recomend nokian WR they are an all weather tire meaning they are good in the summer and good in the winter. they are rated for sever weather by transport canada AND HAVE A 100,000km warranty

Whats a good place to get the nokians?? Also i was wondering what most people do in calgary for rims in the winter?? i have an MSP and need to get some cheap steel rims and winter tires, we could get snow anytime here :(

thanks for reading..

Check the dealer first, they might have some leftover steel rims that they'd be willing to sell cheap. Kramer and North Hill are pretty good.

I never tried Sunridge Mazda because I heard they were crap from two other Mazda owners.

Kal Tire is the exclusive dealer of Nokian in Western Canada so any of their location in Calgary can help you out. They are on sale right now for fairly competitive prices compared to competition from Michelin or Bridgestone.

yes you can.
i had my nokian WR tires on today while i drove on the kanaskis hwy 40
the were amazing the roads weren't plowed and i was the first vehicle up the road(no tracks) i pushed the tires to make them slip but they were very good
not recommended to push to hard i have rally experience. had it up to 110km through the corners

size?

Does anyone know what the best size of steel rim i should be using if i have an MSP with 17" rims? I want to get winter tires and i get dealers telling me 16" and some say 15" are ok....Fountain tire also says 16". Im not sure if they just wanna make more money.

Thanks fro reading

what?

Whats the deal with sunridge mazda? they tried to sell me winter tires that are not within the 3% safety difference. They have a set of previously used winter tires (195 55 15) that the guy said was previously used on an MSP....i checked 1010tires.com and those 55's arent even in the safe zone....REally nice when a mazda dealer tries to shaft you...price is one thing but this SAFETY we are talking about here.

I've run 15" steel rims with Michelin Pilot Alpin rubber for the last two years and no problems at all. Lots of grip and I did not get stuck once. I got the steel rims at a dealer here in Edmonton but any steel rim, 5 hole with a 114.3 bolt pattern would work.

Michelin has a new winter tire called Ice-X and for these you are looking at around $140 CDN apiece.

I'm running 205/55R16 Nokian Hakkapelitta Qs on my Mazdaspeed. The overall diameter of the stock Mazdaspeed tires are larger than a P5 or Protege GT so the dealer snow packages won't have the optimal fit.

Anyone have any idea where we can get a good deal on winter tires and steel rims for a P5.

Kramer Mazda has a "deal" for $239 for each steel wheel and tire. I think it is a bit pricey.

I just got my 15" steel rims and Nordic Icetrac winter tires installed at Canadian tire for a total of $650 (GST included, including tire balenceing). This was the cheapest i could find enxt to walmart. I got 205 60 15 tires. I believe the rims were about $45 each, tires were about $87. I found that the dealers are too expensive and places liek fountain are also rather pricy. You can read my previous post about sunridge, so dont go there.
