windshield.. yet again..

If by OEM you mean getting it done at the dealer, my dealership didn't do them... they contracted it out to a glass/windshield place to do the job.. the 3rd one I did (not warranty) so I took it to a local guy. He was soo nice.. let me come in and watch and snap some pics. He was the one that showed me the work done the first couple of times wasn't done properly.

I mean as in the quality of the OEM(Mazda) windshield versus the Aftermarket windshield.

Mine just cracked this weekend. Tripled in size in a few days. Came out of no where. Upon inspection, i found a spot where it looks like a rock hit under the passenger wiper. It's spread from there. I just got the car two months ago...

Sorry to hear, I know it sucks, I guess just start calling around for the best price and benefits.

go aftermarket.. (yes)

listen to her.. she's the queen of windshield replacements.

Lisa, did they ever replace yours with a true OEM one?

When I got mine replaced it was with a Pilkington.. seems ok aside from the fact that for a few months it would drip drip on the driver's side a-pillar whenever i had my wipers on in the rain. I'm gonna go ahead and assume my a-pillar is now rusting and rotting from the inside out :D

rusting like this?

mine now isn't true OEM.. it has a chip though so maybe my next replacement will be .. (shrug) lol.

probably rusting worse than that.. with the salt and all :(

Maybe a zinc sacrificial anode would help? It might not help much but it shouldn't hurt.

The idea is that a chunk of zinc is placed in electrical contact with the iron you want to protect, and as the zinc dissolves it provides electrons which travel through the metal turning all of the iron into a cathode, which protects the iron from electrolytic corrosion. Any iron electrically connected to the zinc would be protected. This method is very common for fixed metal like railroad tracks, and for boats, but I've never heard of it being used on cars. If there's a boat shop nearby you should be able to buy a chunk of zinc for not too much. Bolt that on the bottom of the car somewhere, so that when your car is getting wet, it gets wet. A chunk of magnesium will work the same way but is probably going to cost a lot more than a chunk of zinc.

I really want that to work. I'll have to look into it, thanks for the info!

dunno what is with you guys...for almost 50k miles i got rocked a few times but NEVER a crack. just tiny nicks like any other car. never a ding either.

but this forum would have you belive the battery is crap...which it doesn't.

the carpets suck...never a single thread was lost on mine.

i think you guys just abuse the car or are making crap up and blame it on the car.

So why are you still here again? (dark)

The battery is crap if you live in a very cold climate, have fun starting with the stock battery if it is a couple years old and it's -20F outside.

I never see people complain about the carpets.. mine are fine though... yeah after 60k miles the driver's side floormat was worn down hardcore but I just picked up the MSP floormats that have the rubber reinforcement near the pedals.

... no one's blaming anything on the car though.

I think it's time for you to (gtfo)

:p

I'm also just now at almost 50k.. i'm not making crap up.. nor did I blame my windshield cracks on the car. It happens. Things sometimes go wrong or break. You fix them and move on.
My problems with the windshield are also the ONLY thing I've had "go wrong" with my protege5.

:p

one day you will relaize how great the car is NOT and you will still return just to see what's up.

the p5 is one of the last cars i would turbo. i had lots of traction issues even with the slow ass automatic.

anyways...

like this windshield thing...about every car on the road has a windshield right? last i heard is that safelight isn't oem quality. you do realize that in a crash the windshield will take some abuse right? there are mathmatics involved. load bearing etc...

i wouldn't replace it with anything less than actual oem. mine was solid. had some big ass rocks hit and bounce right off. 70+ mph for thousands and thousands of miles.

Looks like someone needed to upgrade his tires then. A stock auto protege is about as slow as a kia rio, I'm shocked it could even spin the tires.

And yes, every car has a windshield, but they do vary in thickness. Case in point, the Mazdaspeed Protege has thinner glass (weight savings) than the rest of the Proteges. All it takes to crack those for the dozens of unlucky people who have is doing a lot of agressive driving (track or autocross.. not straight lines, this is a mazda we're talking about after all).

And btw coming into this section of the forum to say how NOT great the Protege5 is .. greeeeat idea troll.

I bought the car because it has amazing styling, awesome functionality, is good on gas (I bet that's one thing you miss about your little P5.. even naturally aspirated soobies don't get too great gas mileage, viscous 4wd system likely the culprit), and is by far the best handling car in it's class. It is for that reason that I do still consider the car great.

thanks for reminding me why I like my car so much :)

waaaay too many cons than pros. I woul dhave thought I would have missed it...but I don't.

tires?? nero m+S are highly regarded and only a couple tenths below the skidpad than the offical summer tire. proxes 4's will out grip them. i promise you that. the p5 is not the car you guys wish it is/was. it's light weight is nice, pretty tossable...it doesn't corner THAT good.

ooohhh...gas? hahahaha i spit on mileage. i bought the gt knowing gas mileage was bye bye. I have seen as low as high 12's and as high as 24.9. i dont even look at the pump prices. if i couldnt afford the gas i wouldnt have gotten the car. moved my deductable higher and premiums are about the same.

viscous limited in the rear, open in the front and planetary type center = traction the p5 could only imagine. open the throttle full in mid corner in the wet. you know what I get?? jet propulsion. you? screeeeeeetch screeeetch.

if being a troll means knowing reality...then so be it. i never pretended...even when i had the p5.

awd+turbo = ass beating...110 in i mode is easy as pie. 105 in the p5 wasn't that good and a little darty. didn;t feel that stable at all.
