Will a bad strut mount damage the strut?

My 03 Mazda Protege has 68K mi on it and its been clunking when I turn and go over bumps.
The guys at the shop said that its a bad strut bearing,
but that I should just wait until the strut goes bad to replace it because its 68K.

Are my struts pretty much doomed to fail soon anyways so I should wait?
Or would getting the mount replaced now be better?

Thanks for any input in advance!

I replace the struts when they go bad but I never go over 100k. I always replace the strut mounts when I do the struts. The strut mounts can clunk but I would seriously investigate the rear sway bar first if your clunk in the rear (my 99 Prot ES had the rear sway bar clunk too)! It sounds a lil premature for the strut mount to fail. You will need an alignment so if you have to pull it apart, just do it all and be DONE.
