Why LSD problems?

I've been closely following all the threads regarding broken msp LSD's....
why does this happen? what makes an lsd go bad? are there special reasons (too fast in a turn, dumpling the clutch etc)

To say the least, it kind of worries me....

Just want to take the necessary precautions.....and not end up with a snapped lsd.....(p.s. driving like a granny isn't an option)

thanks..

Hasn't happened to me yet. I've got 16k+ on my car and I do drive pretty conservatively. I dont dump the car at every chance I get, take corners a little over the posted limit and dont speed too much. Then again, I'm older, I'd lose my job driving like a madman and I want my car to outlive me (not likely, but I can dream can't I?)

P.S.
Hopefully no one will delete your thread because they've been awefully picky in here lately. All you'll hear is "there's already more than one thread on this... do a search. I moved this to the dumpster." lol

Mine went at 25000 miles with a simple acceleration from a stoplight, making a left turn. Not hard, no clutch dumping, no boost. I did kind of beat on the car for a while, but not a lot of drag launches or anything like that. I think autocross and the launches there might have done something. It's odd that it snapped randomly though, no explanation from mazda either.

mines held up alot better than i expected, still no problems and I put 40,000kms on in 8 months + "fun" driving everyday.

mine just went last friday, i was racing at the track and i broke the bearing or something. I'm getting it replaced now. It sucks.

I guess its from all the hard launches.

I have beat mine prety dang hard and it is running great at 65k miles :)
I have been running 12PSI from 2000 miles onward.
I hit every "clear" corner as spirited as I can. I drive about 100+ miles a day and about half of it is down twisting, two lane, country roads. I have had many an oppourtunity to feel the LSD take effect as I pummel my way through a corner, full throttle ,foot to the floor, with the turbo screaming out its sweet 12-13PSI song.
Fun, Fun :)

arent those drives the best, you realize just how happy you are that you didnt buy a srt-4 lol (jk dont start a srt flaming war) I am close to alot of country roads that just love it when you go fast in fast out of the turns.

Its basically all the reasons you listed. I do agree with jdmsam get some motor mounts and try to avoid dumping the clutch.

I disagree. I think the stiffer motor mounts will hurt the transmission. The slack and vibration arn't absorbed by the mounts anymore, instead it is directed into the transmission and engine.

I personally think the motor mounts will stiffen up the car too much. There have also been complaints about noise and problems with the steering. There should be a little give with the car or else you're liable to break something else or you're not going to be happy with the response. With our cars it's fixing one problem and developing yet another. Just the way that it is.

If the drivetrain is wheel hopping its causing more stress b/c the LSD is constantly trying to figure out what wheel to distribute the torque to. With motor mounts if the tires are losing traction that amount of locking is reduced thus why it is worse if you wheel hop. Also, if its on uneven pavement and its bad for the LSD b/c it has to lock up and try to compensate for the unbalanced load to each side continuously.

wheels hop trannys pop end of story, you may have only done it once or twice but since our lsd's are weak once you crack a weld or stress it too bad its down hill from there and itl break on you without warning or when your driving it hard so if youve ever wheel hopped your lsd will most likely break its just that simple fix the wheel hop before you EVER try to launch this car I broke one and had it warrantied after the install i put in f/r mt trans mounts theres no more wheel hop and i highly reccomend them also the tien springs i have help with stopping wheel hop

also i forgot to mention if you think wheel hop isnt that bad think of it like a jack hammer if you hit the concrete with it just once it will barly scuff the surface its the repetitive impacts that cause it to break same thing with trannys if you have a nice smooth consistant push of power it wont break(unless that power is comletely insane) its the repetitive impacts on the drivetrain parts from wheel hop that cause it to break

I have it on my mp3 for about 10k miles, corner pretty hard most of the time. seems to be holding up fine. Launching I avoid because of the damn wheel hop

just got the inserts of the top mounts they are dirt cheep and they helped with launching a little bit more awr makes them
