Why do you have to use Premium Gas

Why do you have to use Premium Gas? why do you need it? because I'm going to try to put one in my p5 but what is the reason for this?

The premium gas allows the ECU to advance the timing as much as possible increasing the horsepower. If you run regular gas the timing will be retarded to avoid pre-detonation, which will basically revert the ECU to regular protege specs....

no idea....pakman, be a little more specific about what you're talking about so we can try to help you out!

well I was looking for the mp3 ecu...but the whole premium gas thing is stupid to me....so I'm not going to get the mp3 ecu.....so I'm looking for a stock P5 or protege 2.0L m/t ECU

lol I've just been using a mix of plus and premium. Manual says it needs an octane rating of 90, so most of the time i run plus and have had no problems

Is your car not turbo'd? You dont want a MP3 ECU anyways. Premium gas saves you money down the line anyhow. I would recomend runing premium if you're turboed.

lol yes this tread is messed. but if you read the first guys name, the one who asked the question because "he wanted to put a MP3 ECU" in his P5 it also states that he has "the only turbo'ed P5" in wherever it is he is at. So just a bit of information for the guy regarding the MP3 ECU and a Turbo.

I hate these things when unclarified... So, you run premium because the MP3 ECU advances timing a LOT over stock; Better low-end on/off throttle response, smoother/faster tip-in response, and an overall gain in a few horsepower. In conjunction with some intake mods (Ported IM and removal of VTCS, et al), you can pick up the difference in power between the MP3 and the P5 (About 10hp, and a lot better fueling in general on the MP3.)

I think it's totally worthwhile, but YMMV. =)

if the manual of your car says to run premium, run premium. how many threads on the topic and misleading consumer reports-type articles do we need to the contrary? i cringed when a chicago news station ran an article about how premium gas is a giant conspiracy and the field reporters went station to station selling people on this bulls***.

turbo vehicles need higher octane gas. high compression engines need higher octane gas. engines running advanced timing need higher octane gas. if you don't use it and are supposed to use it, you're likely opening your self up to the following;

1 - poor combustion and detonation, resulting in engine damage
2 - engine knock, resulting in engine damage
3 - ECU seeing lean condition, misfire or knock and cutting back horsepower drastically

let's say you save 20 cents a gallon at the tank by using chummy 87 octane piss in the tank. so for a 12 gallon fillup you saved a whopping $2.40. if you fill up twice a month you just bought yourself a #1 at the golden arches. so by not using premium gas, for whatever reason, you've saved $57.60 a year or the equivalent of a dozen big mac meals per year. congratulations.

i hate to seem bitter about this but the whole premium VS regular thing from any standpoint is pretty ludicrous. the research is pretty easily obtainable as to why certain cars need premium gas. if saving an xbox game's worth of chump change per year is worth losing horsepower or damaging your car then thats pretty flawed logic if you ask me. the mp3 ecu is a nice compliment to pretty much every n/a mod out there and worth it i think. and if you are running an msp ECU (i thought pak's car was turboed as well, could be wrong) and pouring anything less than 91 in the tank you're not saving money, you're giving your engine a good reason to explode.
