please dont make ur basis on american cars off a cavy, thats like me making a basis on Japanese cars off a suzuki

I have a 1954 (50 y.o.) GMC pick up with the original engine. Granted the I put a couple of transmissions in it and a new rear end, but that was only beacuse it was my first vehicle and I used to do burnouts daily. Who knows how many hundred thousand miles are on it. I know that I put at least one while it was my daily driver... That thing is bullet proof. Literaly. It weighs just under 4800 lbs! However my biggest complaint with US manufacturers is not the reliability but the crappy interior (and until recently, the god awful body cladding that pontiac insisted on putting on every vehicle). Good news for me is the '54 comes with power nothing, and the dash is made out of steel, just like everything else in it.

another thing i dont understand is the '4 speed automatic'... when is GM going to engineer a 5 or 6 speed auto?!?!
i mean the corvette, practically a bargain racecar, is available with an automatic...how many gears does it have? 4! its ridiculous
Hey Friend, even our beloved Mazda build 4spd Auto RX-8 too. If you buy an automatic sport car, it already means you have no expectation on car at first place, so who cares????

Other than that, yeah, GM is piece of crap. You can find plastic peeling off from the door handle on a brand new Cavalier. And the timeless radio design is just (confused)

All I see here are people picking on the same low-end models and trying to base their entire belief of American automobiles on them. The same can be done for any car maker really. And in case no one has noticed, the overall quality and fit-and-finish of import cars, most notably the Japanese imports, has drastically gone down in the past ten years. Toyota in particular has had a serious decline from the pedestal they had built themselves onto.
My P5 was the first non-American family in my family. My dad owned muscle cars growing up and was the first to tell me just how well he thought the car was put together and designed. At the same time, he bought an 03 Hemi Ram (it comes with a 5 speed auto for those of you complaining about that) last fall and there has been absolutely no problems with it. My mom has had Taurus' for a while and while they certainly aren't an enthusiast car, they do what they are inteded to do well. They are comfortable, reliable (there are going to be problems when you built that many cars, it's bound to happen), and not a bad ride. Hell, what about the F-150. Can't be that many turds on the road. By and large, American cars have been lagging behind foreign makes with quality, but the gap is quickly closing as the American makes elevate themselves to where the foreign makes are they are slowly falling down to the Americans.
As far as the Mustang coming with a solid rear, yeah, it kinda is old tech. But it works. It can handle more power than a independent and is generally faster in a straight line.

i will agree that the majority of the cars gm has put out lately are crap...i hate the malibu, cavilier, etc. the gto, although a great performer is hideous...

but, not all american cars are crap. my formula has near 100,000 miles on it, and it runs great. i had an overheating problem, but once that was fixed everything else has run smoothly. i think the interior in that car is just about as nice as the one in my MSP.

the corvette is also an awesome car. maybe not the BEST interior in the world, but where else are you gonna find that kind of power in a car for that kind of money. sorry, but i'd take performance over a pretty dash any day.

the mustang is a horribly styled car. i've never liked the recent ones at all. but i wouldn't go around judging ford by the V6 version of the mustang. of course it feels slow, it's a small ass engine in a big ass car!

i would definitely choose a domestic truck over an import truck too. my mom has an 03 silverado and i really like the interior in it. the seats are comfy...i dont have any problem with it personally.

btw...the worst car my parents have ever claimed to own was a toyota camry...one problem after another. total POS.

well for me the point of the post was not the brand in general. The corvette is an awesome car and I would love to have one, but those cars account for less than 1 percent of gm sales. I like to see a consistency in a brand, protege is lowliest car in the mazda lineup, or rather its the 3 now, yet it still has great fit and finish. In the end I guess you get what you pay for.

AMEN !

Like someone said in here, we get the cavalier/sunfire for like 12000$ here (CDN) and P5s used to start at 20000$ ... what the hell do you guys expect ?

See the price difference between a Z24 and the Mazda3 ... im sure there's a huge difference, although both pretty much have the same power.

What!?! What year was that car? My mom had an 89 Camry 4cyl. Sold it when it hit 200k to my neighbor for like a grand. He drives it up to canada twice a year. The thing is still on its original clutch! Same story with our 4runner(90) only it had 175 on it

wow some strong anti american car feeling here lol my family has always owned Japanese cars well 'cept for the hyundai which was decent but spent alot of time in the shop but were all bout nissans, toyta, and subby's ive only been in 2 american cars my aunts balzer POS it raddles, it shakes and its all in all just ugly, and a saturn, which too was a POS the inside was too cheap looking and confusing IE the window switches were in the center area near the arm rest whos smart idea was that?! who'd feel safe in a plastic car?? not ME!

J.D. Power and Associates 2004 Initial Quality Study
April 28, 2004, 1:19 PM

The rankings of the major automakers in J.D. Power and Associates' annual initial quality survey, which is based on responses from more than 51,000 people who bought or leased new 2004 cars and trucks.

The survey is done in the first 90 days of ownership.

The figures represent the number of problems per 100 vehicles.

Rankings exclude American Isuzu Motors Inc. because of a small sample and Maserati North America because of an insufficient sample:

------

Manufacturer Problems/100 vehicles
Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. 101
American Honda Motor Co. 102
Hyundai Motor America 102
BMW of North America 116
INDUSTRY AVERAGE 119
General Motors Corp. 120
DaimlerChrysler 123
Subaru of America Inc. 123
Ford Motor Co. 127
Mitsubishi Motors North America 130
Volkswagen of America Inc. 141
Nissan North America 147
American Suzuki Motor Corp. 149
Kia Motors America 153
Porsche Cars North America Inc. 159

------

Nissan's score dropped to 147 problems per 100 vehicles with 12 more problems than the 135 recorded last year. But sales of the Nissan Titan (search) pickup truck, Quest minivan and Infiniti Armada, all made in Mississippi, have been disappointing, industry analysts said.

"If you collectively look at the truck products they have most recently launched, there could be some concern," said Jeff Schuster, senior director of global forecasting with J.D. Power.

Virtually every nameplate improved and nearly three-quarters of models," Walters said. Aparrently not the sack of s*** nissian.

i dont like american cars much but my old boss at work had a 80 something ford 150 with 400 and something miles on the original motor, but i would not mind having a chevell or road runner if i was going to drag, but then again im not going to drag so its not a problem

Those numbers are B.S. Ask people what they think of their car and how many problems they have had after one year and you will get totally different numbers (except Toyota will still be #1). Quality goes further than the first 90 days. And they don't specify what a "problem" is.

But.. a 12000 cavi has NOTHING.. does it even have power windows? compare a p5 and cavi with the same equipment and they'll be near the same price. the cavilier is the only GM that is made by dm (no vibes) that is in the price range of the p5. the protege was the cheapest mazda, but they all have the same nice interiors.. i'd take a base model DX protege with a 1.6 over a cavilier any day. And yes I have owned american cars, and my parents have too. I love my "mazda" truck still, but interior did suck. Check the ford or mazda site for interior pictures of the new ranger/b-series though, i actually really like the interior and it doesn't seem low quality to me.

oh and p.s.: WORST CAR eVar!

I bought a 2000 GMC Sonoma back in 2001 "Certified Used". Yeah, Used POS! Thae ******* seats slid into the dash when I stopped! Went to the dealer 17 times for that, and the fix never lasted more than a week, then they would slide into the dash again. Had to jam a 2 by4 to keep the seats from sliding. www.nhtsa.gov has TONS of complaints about them sliding and s***. No recall though.
In the one and a half years of owning that hunk of American crap, I had the heater core, alternator, water pump, rear end, seat recline handles (twice), and a couple other things replaced under warranty, all by 45000 miles. After 50K miles, they stopped trying to fix the seats, and wanted $400 to fix it, again! I was pissed. Plus, it lost $10,000 in value as well.

So we traded that Generally Made Crappy Sonoma in, and got a pair of Mazdas, a 2002.5 Protege5 and a 2002 B3000. Have been rock solid so far. Never buying GMC again.

i would imagine silding seats is a SERIOUS safety concern, i cant even begin to imagine how many ways a person can get hurt by that, but thats just me, obviously GM doesn't feel that way
