i've seen some posts reffering to clutches... but i haven't seen a thread with peoples opinions on clutches... so i thought i would make one.

what's the best clutch out there (in your opinion)?
what about quality to price ratio?
do you prefer 4puck, 6puck or solid?

i've driven centerfoce stage2 clutches on NA civics with motor swaps... and i think they are great... not too rough and they hold the power down good...

some professional advice from a very wise member of this board told me to go with a stage 3 SPEC clutch... drivability and strength...

another professional told me to go with an ACT stating that they last longer then most aftermarket performance clutches...

i say centerforce... cause that's all i've really driven (on the daily)... i'm definately willing to try something different...

i might go with the SPEC (based on advice, and the few snippits i've seen on this board)

POST AWAY!!!

I've heard ACT is crap & nothing but good things about Spec. Stage 3 would be good & I think I'd go with the organic so the engagement isn't overly severe.

members on this forum have had nothing but trouble with the clutchmasters, frequent problems with ACT clutches longevity (although they are holding good while they last), and nothing but good with the SPEC's

how much hp are you going for in the long run? if its like 200whp max then get a spec stage 1, it'll be fine... its rated for 260lb-ft (flywheel) as well as being the cheapest spec offering.

I'm about to order a clutch for my MSP(It's slipping). I need to know if I can just get a clutch for the standard 2.0L protege.I just want to be sure that they are the same before i buy one.

I'm thinking of getting the spec stage 2 clutch.

Thanks for any advise.

so many prefer the SPEC clutch...

i know the spec kit comes with the pressure plate, bearing and alignment tool. doesn't sound bad for 369 bucks after reading their site... they definately know what they are doing...

look at the stage 5 clutch ... it's made of IRON!!!

imagine the engagement on that clutch...

what's this "lightweight" option they speak of on their site?
they say that any SPEC clutch can be equiped with the lightweight option.

I am running a Bully Clutch stage 4, sintered iron both sides of a 4 puck clutch and an upgraded pressure plate with twice the clamping force.

Wanna talk about engagement!!!

here is Beau's prices on the spec clutches... http://**************************.c...23_40&osCsid=979d574a6ab9220a163df166a860fa89

the clutches below stage 4 have a stock pedal feel. (the stage 3 full face is slightly harder)

just contact MAMotorsports via PM if you want to order anything

yeah beau is a great guy... i'm going to be ordering from him anyway... but i just want to see some reviews before i decide...

focus, how much did you pay for your bully clutch? how is it in 1st? (you don't have to answer the next one... LOL) how often did you stall out when you first got the clutch / do you still stall out in 1st? hehehe

good timing for this tread as i'm getting a wish list together and was wanting info on clutches and flywheels. now i was leaning toward the clutchmasters since the combo price for clutch and flywheel is the best deal. BUT looks like i may deal with MAM for the spec stage 1 instead. Does anyone know how light the spec flywheel is? also will any flywheel work just as well as the other? Fidanza is about $55 less than spec, so i may go with that. also anyone know how light corksport "lightweight" mazdaspeed flywheel is? that one is only $172. i'm not so cheap, just don't feel the need to pay more if performance is going to be the same, ya know.

My clutch is cosidered like a stage 4 plus. It is a 4 puck sprung, wit a pressure plate that has different ratios and it also has needle bearings. I think they are needle bearings.

I paid $600 CDN for it. about $500 USD.

I kept stalling it out in 1st because the pedal was too low from the reworked angles. We adjusted the pedal back up. Now I don't stall it, but from a stop you have to rev a little more or else it will chatter slightly.

Originally I had a Hybrid stage 3, but it would not hold the power. I have 300 horse at the wheels!

STAY AWAY from Clutchmaster IIR.... the clutch didn't last me more than 30K...and I do not race (on the track or street).

Contact Beau from MAM for the Spec Line of clutches... I love my Stage 3/4 Hybrid. I drive in traffic everyday and the feel is very close to stock.

For Canadians looking for the clutch.. check out www.ctamotorsports.com (i would have purchased from Beau...but shipping, taxes, and duty are a b****)

never had a problem with ACT kit. Although, Im having some slippage @ 13+psi, too much wear and tear, I blew my engine with that kit, and still running.

is the flywheel the same for mazdaspeed and base proteges?
Yes it is. You can get your local machine shop to put your flywheel on a lathe, take some material down, and then they can rebalqnce it. Much cheaper than buying a whole new flywheel!

yeah act is crap....I actually put my stock clutch back in because the act starts slipping with slicks on.

Of course it could have been because I went over the limit of the act street clutch, but I find it highly unlikely on a stock msp.

Thats what i thought, but on the SPEC website it has a flywheel for the base protege, but none for the mazdaspeed. just thought it was odd.
