?? 160WHP only slighted modded?! I have intake, header, catback, jdm FS-ZE intake cam, underdrive pulley, etc and I'd be happy to break triple digits WHP :P

Oh, I don't currently have a protege I have a Probe GT (Mazda mx6) with the KL v6 in it..

Its becoming fairly common for us to hit 180whp-190whp NA on a stock block bith bolt-ons and a Megasquirt with a good tune. ;) Boosted its common to see 400whp on a stock block. V6s are fun. :)

You bastard. A few people in Quebec have done the KL swap into the third gen proteges. It's definitely sweet.

Anyone know which car uses the RF engine? I think it is the euro turbo diesel that the msp's got the rad/IC from, but I am not positive. Whatever it is, it uses the same G15MR tranny that we do, and they have a 4th and 5th gear that has caught my attention.

Gear) MSP - GTX - RF

3rd) 1.31 - 1.31 - 1.31
4th) 0.97 - 0.97 - 0.914
5th) 0.755 - 0.717 - 0.68

I threw the GTX (G5MXR) specs in there too just for comparison. Looks to me like the 4th and 5th from the RF version of the G15 might be the ticket.

Thoughts?

Yeah, that sounds pretty good..

One other option is to also have the gears shotpeened if you are worried about the strength of the gears you are thinking about. There is a company called Metal Improvement Inc. that knows gears VERY well and has strengthened gears for everything from NASCAR to street rods with great results.

Shotpeening seems to be the way to go, alot of the DSM trans builders are doing it, thats how they are able to have daily driven 9 second DSMs without having to go to a custom cut gearset. Alot of the drag compacts are doing it and their trans are holding up really well.

I mean, they shotpeen the H-beam connecting rods, cranks, etc and it helps them, it also helps gears too.

Can you go to a ford dealership and order the festiva 5th gear? Any idea on PN#, or what year, engine combo i need to ask for?

That would be a no. Ford discontinued those parts, just checked this morning.

3rd gear, GTX on the left, protege on the right:

I will post my impressions of the GTX 3rd and 5th soon.

Just to let everyone know, when I replaced my differential (because my stock one broke) I put a new .71 5th gear in from a 4-cyl Probe. It was a direct swap, I got the transmission for $20 at a local junkyard as the case was cracked due to the accident it was in.

My rpms are about 500 lower on the highway and over the past 3 tanks I've got an average of 1.5 more mpg. My driving has been about 50/50 city highway, with lots of stop and goes trying to break in my new clutch. This current tank and the next tank should be 95% highway.

Well I'm gonna call my parts hookup and check on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th gearsets posted on page 7. The RF gears would be sweet, but I'm pretty sure you'd have to import them. And sicne the car was a turbo diesel, I bet they'd be mad strong...

Let me know if you have any luck finding RF gears. That is truly what i'm looking for. The ratios are kick ass and if they can hold the power (which they can) it would be perfect. RF Gearing in 5th puts a top speed around 175mph. I could live with that.

I agree, the RF gears would be best, but I'm pretty sure you'd have to import them. I'm on the phone as we speak, I'll let you know.

Edit: No go on the RF gears. said he had another guy ask the same thing. The gears are not listed in Mazda NA parts database, since the car was only sold overseas. Try contacting Corksport or someone.

Okay, here's the skinny on the Mazda OEM GTX gears. THese are for the 1988 323 GTX AWD and my parts hookup (very knowledgeable) agrees that the gears are extremely strong. The parts listed on page 7 were correct, but have since had changeup part numbers, and they are as follows.

3rd Gear:

Primary:
Was: G401-17-230A
Now: GC02-17-230B

Secondary:
Was: G401-17-305A
Now: G501-17-305B

4th Gear:

Primary:
Is: G401-17-303A

Secondary:
Is: G402-17-210A

5th Gear:

Primary:
Was: G512-17-610
Now: G561-17-611A

Secondary:
Was: G512-17-308
Now: G522-17-308

I hope that clears up some confusion. Use the "Now" parts numbers and order from your dealer. Once again, these are the Mazda factory 1988 323 GTX AWD gears.

these are the gears we sell with our trans kits. the 4th gear has not been orderable here for a while though.

Whoo hoo! I have them. The mechanic said that it might slightly change my gear ratios but I haven't verified it yet. Still waiting on parts from Juan to finish the car.

Ken, you have to stop offering stuff on your site that I want. I saw that engine rebuild manual and it gave me expensive thoughts...:D

Just got an ETA. 3-4 weeks on the 4th gear set. Has to come from Japan. Want me to order you a few sets Ken? Lol.

Well, ordered 3rd and 5th gearset. All 4 gears are coming out of Irvine, CA. The 4th gear needs to come out of Japan, and I can't afford to wait another month to get my car together.

now it was interesting to note that when using the new 3rd gear in a 323 there is a changeup o nthe bearing that goes with it. The bearing number is GC02-17-305B and that corresponds to the GC02-17-230B gear.

Ken, can you confirm? that this bearing is not needed in the G15M-R transmission?
