I was signing all my paperwork for my MSP yesterday and of course the sales guys try to sell you Rustproof, Paintguard & Seat protection. Who is buying this from them? Is it really worth it? I think it was about 1600 cdn for the rust and paint. They also told me that if I take my car to someone else and they drill holes to put the rustproofing in that voids my warranty is that:bs: ? They say that it has lifetime warranty.

I really like the idea of the paintguard but how effective is it and what alternatives are out there? would a good wax job do the same thing?

I know I can get Krown or whoever to do the rustproofing but if they drill holes and void my warranty I will be pissed.

If anyone purchased this can you please tell me what you paid for it because I am sure that if I mess with them I can get the price down a nice bit.

dont let the dealer fool you, just drilling holes will not void your warranty. Look in the nice little mazda book that came with your car, in there is a nifty little packet about your rights and protections for warranty work. Also check out www.sema.org you will find alot of info there.

As far as the rust proffing, and pint protection, its really not worth the 1600 bones. You can get macco to do the undercarrage rust proofing for like 300 bucks. For the paint, that really is up to how YOU take care of the car.

Hope that helps

Pricewise, that sounds too much... but I would get it done IF you plan on keeping your car for many years. My old 79 Suburban had rustproofing and undercoating done... took over 20 years before i even saw rust on it, and it had LOTS of miles...

i got it and almost killed people from the dealership due to the fact that i drove the hour back up to my dealership to get a chunk of undercoating off my drivers seat. a month or so later when i put my winter wheels on while taking off the racingharts i found that they undercoated the hell out of those as well. dumbshits! i also found several spots on the underside of the car around the body panels that had undercoating on them. not a happy camper i was. but i figured with the winters up here and all the salt they throw down it would probably be worth it. as far as the paint goes the way it was explained to me that with this paint protectant stuff if i get any chips and its starts to rust or flake or anything the area gets repainted. whether it be the hood, front bumper, whatever. we'll see how things go. i think both of those and the scotch gaurd stuff was like another $500 - $600.

worth it to some, not to others

i got the undercoating, i think i paid $5oo. It's guaranteed for llife, and they re-do any spots that peel etc.

Coming from an Acura on which i had the wheel wells done twice, and need to be done again... i wasn't messing around.

It's like a wax substance they use.

I figured i'd pay once for this, as opposed to getting Krown or Rust Check done every year. The oil makes a mess, plus they have to drill.

Just my $0.02.

Whoa tekkie, $1600 sounds a bit high! Here is the price list I got (from Avante):
---------------------------------------------------------
Rust shield, 10 yr warranty $640
Sound shield, 10 yr warranty $320
*Paint shield, 5 yr warranty $260
Fabric shield, 4 yr warranty $160

Take advantage of our package savings!
Silver pkg: Rust/Sound $725
Gold pkg: Rust/sound/paint $845
Platinum pkg: Rust/sound/paint/fabric $995
----------------------------------------------------------

I've got the pamphlet if you want additional details on what the different "shields" entail. I'm not going to get any of that stuff, because I don't let people eat in my car, I don't plan on keeping the car longer than my 4 yr lease, and my current car is about twice as loud as the MSP (literally), so it won't seem loud at all to me.

One thing I am seriously considering is the WearCare package, which lets you get away with "excess wear and tear charges at scheduled lease-end, up to $3500" including broken lights, bumper damage, wheel damage, tires with less than 3.2 mm of depth, dents, scratches, paint damage, stains if fabric, cracked/broken glass. So if you are leasing, instead of paying a $500 security deposit, you pay $535 for WearCare (but you never get any of the $535 back at lease end, whereas you might get some of your $500 security deposit back at lease end.)
This would pretty much pay for itself if you brought it back with bald tires, for example. What do you guys think?

* "You never have to wax your car!"
"But what would I do on the weekends then?"

Thanks for the info guys.

Grimace those prices sound much better. I will ask my dealer about that and hopefully knock them down some more on the Platinum pkg. If they dont go for it I will just take my car to Avante and have them do it :) so thanks for the info that is exactly what I was looking for.

As far as the WearCare it sounds like a good deal to me, if I was leasing I would go for it.

Don't get any of that crap! It's basiclly a profit canter for the dealer and a rip off. Mazda gaurantees their paint work for 5 years and any of this undercoating will actually void that warrenty even if done by the mazda dealer. I'm a salesperson at a Mazda/VW dealer by the way and we don't sell this stuff even if people ask for it for this very reason. It will probably make your car more likely to rust anyway. Just stick with the factory protection - it is already on the car and warrantied.

No prob Tekkie.
One note though: the dealer said I had to decide before I received the car if I was going to go for any of those packages, and I had to have it done before I signed the final deliver papers for the car. Strange rule, but whatever. So I'm not sure you could get the car at one dealer, then go get that stuff done to it at another.

Sound shield?! what is it?:p

its just the thick black crap they spray under the wheel wells so it stops noise, sort of like tar

There is LOTS of margin in this stuff, the " Business Manager " usually sells it to you and makes commision on it based on how much you pay for this stuff. They try to make you buy it before the final deal is signed as they add this stuff in the clean up shop when the car is in PDI.

As far as is it a good value ? I took our MP3 to Krown and most likley will take out MSP to Krown as well. 100 bucks cdn a car. On the Mazda's they do not have to drill since there is factory holes in the doors etc that they can use.

For paint protection if you use a good wax system ( I used Mothers 3 step ) and use a clay bar before you wax it. These cars have been sitting in the elements for a loooooong time and the clay bar works wonders. You can get all this stuff at Cdn tire. Will take you 4 hours and save you a few bucks.
