Perf we have had like 4 guys with blown seals and I have been back and forth with garrett on this. Intially I thought it was the feed getting to much oil pressure. Well that was not the case because garrett advised me that even if you had lots of pressure nothing would happen since there is an internal reducer within the center cartridge. Then I thought maybe the drain line so we shortned it up.............guess what one of those 4 with the smoking turbo has the setup like DANA with the short oil line. Then I put a garrett on my car and I mad sure all the oil lines were perfect....................guess what!........smoking on my honda:mad: So I replaced the turbo to see what would happen and left all the original lines............guess what............it did not smoke:confused:
I know what you mean. I cant say we havent had problems with any manufacturer but garret is really all we deal with . When you want as much power as they can provide sometimes that is the price you pay. I have learned though that the return line is a big culprit to deal with. We have installed many exterior pumps to get the oil out of the turbo faster. It seems to help alot.

Unfortuantly we do not warranty turbos since we do not make them, the respective manufacture is responcible for this. Apparently garrett really has not showed interest or helped much. Kinda of how the rest of the aftermarket industry handles its warranty claims i.e GREDDY, TURBONETICS and Garrett. I have constantly been in contact with my garrett distributor and even he is being a bastard about it. So do we forsee any newly designed GT series turbos in the future on our kits:p

Perf, unsure and how extensive your history is with garretts on turbo cars but it seems to be the norm tha many racers say that the tend to be leaky turbos at idle and seal up when you drive them. There GT turbos do not have this problem and by the way Mitsu turbos rarely have these issues, they also like lots of oil pressure and are not sensitive to oil drainage issues.
i can agree with this statement 100%
the mitsu's though dont exactly have the same thrust protection like the garrets do. The gt series with the " ball bearing" center seem to have better luck.

whats happening is oil is leaking out of the rear seal and gets in the downpipe, the oil then burns off and becomes white smoke

Excuse my saying earlier. I should have clarified. If the oil is burning outside the combustion chamber i can see how it would be white or even chalky in color. I mentioned earlier about the synthetics burning this way. The fully synthetic i have seen burn in the chamber and in the exhaust and come out somewhat white.
Even pale in color.
The mineral oil seems to be a dark blue or hazy color when burned in the cylinder. But it would explain what keola is experiencing since you have been thru this before.
Usually a rule of thumb is coolant is white and sweet smelling. So my statement was not complete. Please forgive the explanation i gave earlier. We were debating on going with the new ball bearing centers but we will leave that up to the consumer for the added cost.

So...how we get this solved...repair seals when leaking some serious oil, everytime and so on?

White smoke will eventually, on the long run, leak oil right?

I dont mind that white smoke, I can live with it.
you can prevent some of this by trying to get the oil out of the cartridge just as fast as it comes in. I understand spoolin that garret says it has an internal reducer but in theory it will increase the pressure against the seal when not evacuated properly.
we use a larger marine application silicone hose for return line. On some models we are incorporating an external pump to help pump the oil thru. It helps, but is not practical for kit production.
