Hey guys,

When my car is cold there is a lot of white stuff that comes out of the exhaust. I can tell it's a lot because when I accelerate I can see it from the driver's seat.

It goes down as the car warms up, but takes a long long time to completely go away (long after the temp gauge is at regular temp).

And also the bottom of my exhaust tip is black.

Does anyone else have this?

Probably normal.
Overnight water condenses in the exhaust and muffler. When starting in the am, especially when humid, it heats up and is boiled off so steam comes out. Same reason you see water coming out of exhausts in the morning.

Now if it happens every single time you start the car, warm or cold, then you may have a problem.

make sure your coolant is at a good and constant level. If that's teh case then I wouldn't worry about it...

Totally normal on cool days, especially in somewhere as wet and humid as vancouver at this time of year. If you start to lose coolant then you have a problem, but if the coolant level isn't changing odds are you are fine. I think the hatchback design of our cars makes it even more evident than on a sedan because of the way the exhust swings up around the back window.

Does it smell sweet? If so, it's coolant. If not, then 99.9% it's just the condensation burning off in the exhaust. You should probably see other cars doing the same thing around you- depending of course on how warm they are at the time.

If your coolant is low, it's probably burning coolant.

Low oil? Probably burning oil.

Both fine? then it's condensation. And I'll keep my balls thank you. :)
