Whine when downshifting into first?

I would just wait until you stop, its nicer on the car.

Only time I have ever reached for first while moving was a really, really slow corner in an auto-x

i almost always stay out of first while slowing because it blocks you out until you are going really slow anyway. i just figured the whine was whatever mechanism it is that blocks you out of that gate when going faster, it seems like the whine gets quieter as it gets closer to letting me in. Either way i think its best to only down shift to second for engine braking.

Wow, you can barely tell dan1101's and knowledge007's avatars apart!

Personally, I shift into first while slowing down... I don't release the clutch though.

Has anyone else heard a bit of gear whine when downshifting into first while coming to a stop? It doesn't sound too harsh but it's noticeable.

Down Shifting into first is pointless. All it does is put major wear and tear on the car. As stated in earlier posts, use your breaks.

gear whine is completely normal.... but I do agree that I would not downshift to first..... 2nd provides all the engine braking you need

Agreed. There really isn't any need to put it into first until you are at a stop and ready to go again. I heel-toe downshift through every gear until 2nd when I slow down. Then push in the clutch just as I'm about to stop and then put it into neutral. I don't put it into first until I'm ready to take off again. I really don't see the need to downshift into first since you have to be almost at a crawl anyways.

as ryz said, the whining is your transmission trying to prevent you from doing something very very bad. don't use first gear unless you are starting up from a complete stop. it's just not designed for anything else...that's why the car feels all jumpy and rough as compared to other gears.

try this: while moving at 10mph, gently try to shift into 1st gear. you will notice that your shifter resists such a motion and you hear the whining you spoke of.

now try this: wait until you are at a full stop, then gently try to shift into 1st gear. you will notice that your shifter slides right into 1st gear like butter.

the car is complaining in the first case because you're doing something it was not made to do. please don't do it out of love for your baby...;)

I think what is being described is not actually downshifting into first and using first gear to brake. Almost every car I have ever owned over the past 19 years of driving I'm coming to a stop rolling to about 10mph clutch in and slight pressure on the shifter up into fist until it slips in then easing out like a rolling stop. The more force you put behind the shifter to get into first at too high of a speed the louder the whining of the synchros get. It's just a matter of learning the car where that spot and force is. It's totally normal.

100% agree

That is stupid...you do not down shift into first no matter what speed you are at. What are you a nub. First is only used to start moving AT A DEAD STOP!!! Thats why you are hearing the whines. It is not normal b/c you do not downshift into first.

Yeah, there is absolutely no reaosn to dounshift into first and release the clutch. 1st is a START-UP gear- from a dead stop.

Ya, I really don't see why I can't (while the clutch pedal is fully down) downshift into first while I'm coming to a stop. I've always done that. I won't do that in the MS3 if it stresses the synchros, but it's puzzling.

lol funny thread

ok the "resistance" everyone is talking about is a mechanism in all modern transmissions called synchronizers. their job is to match the speeds of moving parts in manual transmissions so that when you shift into any gear, everything is moving at the same rate and you don't hear any grinding or popping when the gear is engaged.

the resistance is just that, resistance. if you force it into first before it is ready, it'll go, but you'll knock gear teeth. not a great thing. not a horrible thing.

the synchronizers are a wear part, as they are designed to take something that is moving at one speed and change it to another speed. just like brakes, clutches etc.

obviously, the more often and more extreme the speed change (ie shifting to first at 30 mph all the time) the more wear you are putting on this part. just like if you go out and burn the clutch all the time or brake like a maniac.

anyway, to sum up, you aren't doing any "damage" by shifting to first before being at a complete stop. you're just causing wear parts to wear. the only drawback is that I've never heard of anyone replacing synchronizers. if they wear out (and trust me you'll know when they wear out) you'll probably end up on the hook for a new tranny.

hope this helps.

well, I guess there's no such thing as a stupid question?

anyway, didn't mean to flame anyone.

I think its funny that the thread starter claims he has been driving stick for 20 but yet has to ask such a ridiculous question...

Are you the resident asshole or something? Every board has to have one.

Are you saying I haven't been driving stick for 20? My first car in 1987 was a 1978 MGB, they don't come in anything but 4-speed. All my daily drivers since then have been stick, a 74 Fiat 124 Spider, 90 Mustang GT, 98 Contour, a 91 Mustang GT.

I'm telling you how I've always driven, I've always shifted into first (with the clutch in) while coming to a stop. The MS3 whines at me when I do that, so I'll quit. Old habits are hard to break.

I've never had to fix a transmission in my vehicles, and I've only replaced one clutch, that was the 78 MGB.

Believe what you want, I don't give a s***.

Did I say you haven't...no, I said you claim. Meaning there is no way for me to confirm nor do I give a s***...

I am trying to hold back Mods, I just hope this has been flagged considering I have been flagged for less than this ridiculous insult.
