It depends how much overheating occured and if the coolant mixed with the oil or not.

Mazda standard process is that if there is coolant in the oil they replace the engine automatically. If not then they replace the head (the entire head because it is likely cracked, not just the gasket). The jeep dealer may not be familiar with the issue with these engines. I recommend you print the Mazda TSB and bring it to them.

Also if you can, you can join the class action lawsuit if it is still active.

Doesn't sound like it is.

I am not 100% sure this is the case, because there are multiple different lawsuits. Does the reddit article confirms exactly which one is being cancelled?f. You might be right, but i still have some hope. Examples:

This one is in California from Jarvis et al: https://www.classaction.org/media/jarvis-et-al-v-mazda-motor-of-america-inc-et-al.pdf
I think this is the original one

This one is also in California but from Matt Cauler ( Cauller et All) and was apparently filed a few days ago: Mazda class action claims thousands of vehicles have engine defect

Hi all,

Coming to report I am officially joining the party! Engine started overheating yesterday/today. Brought the car to AAA for diagnostic. They found the issue is head gasket crack and coolant leak.

I bought the car from a jeep dealer back in ‘21 so I bought a mopar extended warranty. I an gonna have the car towed from AAA to my local jeep dealer tomorrow to get this addressed. Am I still likely to have the whole engine replaced or do we think they’ll attempt to just fix it?

I have a 2018 Mazda 6 Signature with the 2.5L turbo. 65,100 miles

This is just absolutely lovely.
So small update: got it towed to Jeep, they said because its engine related they didn’t want to touch it since they didnt have anyone certified to work on it and didnt even have part numbers to order. They offered to try if I really wanted but they said they honestly felt I’d be better off taking to Mazda.

So I got it towed again to Mazda. Theyre gonna redo the diagnostic and then we’ll go from there. They won’t have a loaner available for like a week and a half so I’m stuck with no car in the meantime (yaaay)

Just posting here but I did receive an official letter from Mazda stating they are extending the power train warranty for the coolant leak to 120k miles and 10 years if the damage matches TSB 01-002/23. They are also offering reimbursement for out of pocket expenses as a result of this. I ultimately traded in my CX-9 a year ago as I couldn't rationalize the $8000+ expense of replacing an engine as estimated by my local Mazda dealership for a car with a KBB of $10,600. Mazda is unwilling to work with me as I traded in my car even though I lost money in the deal since I'm no longer the owner.

My understanding is that the reimbursement is for out-of-pocket expenses for repairs made to affected vehicles. It sounds like you traded the car in, instead of paying for the repair, so there are no out-of-pocket repair expenses to reimburse.

Someone else bought your car, then presumably paid to replace the engine. That person would be eligible for reimbursement.

Just coming here to let everyone know and give some hope...We had to have our engine replaced in Sep of '22 due to this defect. After fighting with our local dealership we had to pay $2100 out of pocket for the repair back then. Received the CSP letter from Mazda in late December, applied for re-imbursement on Jan 1st, and was notified yesterday that Mazda has approved our claim and would be receiving payment in 10-14 days! Good on Mazda for FINALLY making this right.

Agreed. I didn’t go to the stealership for my repairs. Bought the needed parts (~$1000) from Mazda and had a local mechanic replace the cracked cylinder head. He only charged me $2k but then I had issues with the fuel injector seals that cost another $1000 to get fixed right. Had to finally do the repair myself. Submitted a claim for just over $4k with receipts for everything and still haven’t gotten a response.

We hit a large deer with the CX-9 the day before the letter arrived. Body shop estimate for the repairs is $11,600+. Expecting our insurance company to call with their plans for the repair. Won’t be surprised if they call it a total loss. This car has been a major pain which makes me sick because I really enjoyed driving it twice in the last 2 years!

Hey guys, just checking in for those who eventually got a pay out from the Mazda USA since the Jan 2025 official letter going out.
I have finally received the prepaid mastercard but the amount is short. It seems like they pay me everything but the exhaust manifold cost (part# py8v-13-450h), that is about $1500 short for my claim. At the time that i took it to the Mazda dealership for the engine replacement due to this coolant leak, they recommend to change out the manifold at the time since they said the manifold is redesigned and it will lessen the chance of this coolant leak to happen again, where i took the option to change it. I just sent an email to find out what is going on since the Mazda reimbursement department does not email you to tell you what and why things are approved/disapproved.

I feel like the manifold should be part of this approved claim, i want to see if anyone out here had the manifold changed out too while the engine is being replaced

The head is redesigned, not the manifold. They were only supposed to replace the head. The dealer either lied or was misinformed and You got taken. Unless the manifold was also cracked or warped, there was no need to replace it.

I think replacing the exhaust manifold seems prudent since it was the cause of the cracking in the first place. Furthermore, the exhaust manifold is integrated with the head, so that should be explored further. I am not sure to what degree it is integrated or the specifics, so can't comment on that. I suspect that it is partly integrated, so the part that is described as the exhaust manifold (downstream) may not have changed and then you may have been duped. Maybe only the gasket was changed to allow for more flex? I recall that rough roads was a cause for early failure. I feel bad for the new owner of my 2018 CX-9 since the roads where I used to live were horrible.

Replacing the manifold was unnecessary, as @Tchman2016 mentioned above. The cylinder head and gasket were redesigned to account for this issue. The exhaust manifold does not need to be replaced or changed.

@taiweitai, because the manifold did not need to be replaced for the repair according to the related TSB and the CSP11 program, it would not be included in the reimbursed costs, and Mazda Corporate would clarify that for you when/if they reply to an inquiry. At this point, you can only try to dispute the cost with the dealership, but since the work has already been done and you likely don't have the old part to compare, the dealership can just lie (again) about whether the manifold replacement was necessary or not. Be prepared for a fight.. if anything, you can try to see if Mazda will give you some grace if you explain that you feel like the dealership took advantage of you by suggesting that you replace a part that was outside of the scope of the repair.
