K peps I need some help here I'm getting mixed information from different people.
How many miles is it okay to switch to synthetic oil?
And which do you recommend? I've always used Mobil 1 with my neon. Which weight is recommended though?

Thanks! :D

i use mobil1 5w30 and it works great, car starts easy, very nice overall, much smoother, i changed over at 2500 miles, there is debate over when to change over, my auto teacher says 10k but i was happy w/ 2500, up to you

I changed over to Synth on my first scheduled oil change, 8000 km. I do it every 8000, like the book says.

I use Castrol Syntec 5W30, car runs nice, felt a little peppier and smoother @ idle.

Synth in a noen, what a waste...

Offical noen hater here!!!

My first two oil changes (1000 miles & 3000 miles) i used regular oil. My next two (6000 & 9000) I used Mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30.

I use Castrol GTX 5W-30. I used Castrol Syntec 5W-30 once, the car did run a bit smoother, but to me the advantages did not justify the cost.

If I drove a BMW M3 then I would use premium synthetic oil. I think it is required to cars like that.

i switch over to synthetic at 19,000 miles! is that bad? as for the difference, it feels smoother..

ive been usein Valvoline Syntec 10w30 ever since ive had my p5. runs nice and smooth, doesnt hesitates at all.

(wiggle) okay thanks guys, your great.
I did the switch to mobil 1 last night. I'm suprised how much of a difference it made. Its so much smoother and quiet. I didn't think it would make that much of a difference.

Changed to Mobil 1 on third change (@15K) and it works great. With the high rpms the P5 like to go to on start up, the Mobil gets to everything a lot quicker than the dino.

I hate it too - a car that costs 20K and makes something like 240 hp out the door.

synthtic is waste of money on a ecnobox. just change your oil every 3k or 3months you'll save hell alot of money. I've been using 10w30 cheap oil on my mazdaspeed and runs perfect. Friends dad's civic has 200k miles on it and still running strong with dino oil.

Royal Purple Synthetic all the way! Awesome stuff but probaly the most expensive. Used to run it in my audi..... made a difference...don't know about the Pro5 though....i'll find out soon when I change muh oil.....

WOW! I'm so glad you cleared that up for all of us! If I'm not mistaken your mazdaspeed has a garrett T-25 or T-30 (Can't remember which) turbo in it and I know that the T-30 (Not sure about the T-25) is a water/oil cooled unit which will last much longer if you run a high quality synthetic, so you may give some thought to switching over to a high quality synthetic. It's cheap insurance against issues later on. But hey, it's your car, and maybe you bought the 100,000 mile warranty, so you may not care...

From what I've read in other forums, Royal Purple is the best. Mobil 1 is a synthetic based on dino oil, so it's not technically 100% synthectic. I use it in my wife's car, and figure if it's good enough for Porsche -- factory-speced in the 911 Turbo -- then it's good enough for me.

I'm going to give RP a shot in my P5 and see how expesive it gets -- plan to buy a case of it. I figure $5-6/qt is cheap insurance against future engine problems. I plan on driving this car until it dies, so I'd rather pay due diligence upfront.

Also, synthetics are the way to go if you live in a colder climate because they flow better at lower temperatures. Which is why I'll make the complete switch (brakes, power steering, tranny & engine oil) to synth in the Spring. That way I can compare how it runs throughout the Summer and Winter.

From what I've read here (and elsewhere), you can't beat the OEM filter; buy a few at a time and see if your dealer offers quantity discounts.
