Where Is Mazda Headed Next?

Lexus RX is one vehicle requires front license plate to disguise the ugly big black “X” front fascia so that it looks a bit better!

Acura MDX finally gave up that big chrome “tooth” at front and back now it looks more ordinary and much nicer.

Strongly agree, but to be hones that RX looks decent from this angle. Not any other angle though.

Not sure how this thread ended up being about some ugly Lexus, but since were at this point I guess Ill say what I think.

1. Mazda is not a luxury brand yet, meaning they dont have the luxury features and choices you would expect.

2. Lexus has been making luxury cars since 1990 and is a full 2-3 decades ahead in terms of Mazda, who has just recently gotten out of the economy market and is a few steps away from becoming full fledged luxury. Give them time!

Kluger? Wtf?

Highlander is already used by Hyundai as their name for the top spec Tuscon.

Hence the name Kluger.

And 2017 CX-9 EPA passenger volume is 135.1 ft. Lexus RX has 17.7 more passenger volume than CX-5, and CX-9 has 13.8 ft more interior volume than RX. So even if you compare only interior, which side the RX is closer? When I parked our 2016 CX-5 next to friends 2017 Lexus RX 350, their size deference is very obvious.

The RX 350 has more space in the front, but a small cargo area. CX-5 has less space in front, with a much larger cargo area. When you sum them up, it's 134.5 ft for the CX-5 and 139.7 for the RX. RAV4 has 139.1 ft and CR-V is 142 ft. I think the RX gets lumped into the midsize category because of its length. In terms of actual, usable space, it's a compact SUV.

Most RXs in Lexus dealers are around $53K MSRP well equipped. Friends RX has $53K MSRP but easily negotiated to $47K with everything I mentioned in my previous post sans panorama glass roof. It has so many features with much better color selection and combination not found in the top-of-line CX-9 Signature! You think you can find a CX-9 Signature at $37K? ;)

Doubtful. Best offer we got on the CX-9 was $40k for the Signature and $38k for the GT.

Between 227hp and 295hp using regular gas pulling 4,000+ pound vehicle, which engine do you prefer? Theres no replacement for displacement, especially the real-world fuel efficiency is not much different. And the longevity of the turbo charger on CX-9 is still unknown but Toyotas 3.5L V6 has been proven very reliable.

I would take the 2.5T, absolutely, for all the reasons previously mentioned. I agree that longevity is more of an unknown with the 2.5T, but I certainly prefer its performance.

Of course were comparing apple to orange, comparing the Mazda to Lexus is not fair. I merely say if Mazda wants to go luxury, therere too many things need to catch up!

I don't know what Mazda's direction is anymore. Maybe they want to be a luxury brand, and if so they need to do some learning. Right now, they seem to want to compete in the mass market segments, but at the premium end, where they don't have to compete based on incentives and don't need a huge dealer network.

Mazda tried luxury with Amati. It never got off the ground. It turns out Mazda is better at making inexpensive cars that corner well, a recipe that's worked for them since the early 70's

Fun fact: The 1st Amati ended up being the Millenia, which had a Yamaha engine in it. The Miller Cycle.

Update, Mazda is revealinf their new designs October 23. Saw these pictures and the announcement on Facebook. It appears that they are ditching the kodo front fender line for good, but the new sheetmetal looks very expensive and the proportions of that second image look rather RWD indeed. The Mazda 3 hatch looks like a refined, mature version of the current one. The future seems to be looking up for the brand. :)
