when the vent setting is set to NON recycle where does the outside air come into the cabin from?
does it come from anywhere around the engine bay? or from inside the engine bay?

i know whne it is set to RECYCLE it comes from a vent from around the rear bumper area.

I'm pretty sure that the air is received from the lower windsheild cowl (the black trim just below the wipers).

u sure about that? (scratch)

Not completely, but several cars that I've worked on do vent outside air from that location. Honestly, I haven't paid that much attention to that particular system on the Protege. Basically, I'm making an assumption here, but you know what they say about assumptions, heh.

I was asking tttp5 about his rear-bumper-draughting-of-recycled-air statement...

Gotcha, missed the quote there. When in recycle mode, the cabin air is just recirculated and not drawn from the exterior of the car.

i think i was looking at the protege manual on protege.ugly.net? i forgot the exact web location but I think i remember seeing it saying something about a vent in that position. i know the celica has a vent around that position cause i red about ppl saying they would flip down one of the seats to allow hot air to get out of the car quicker.

if air is constantly recycled then won't we all die from CO2 poisoning?

It's acually more of CO poisoning. CO2 is carbon dioxide and we breathe that out anyway and will take a long time to build up that much CO2 to be toxic. And our cars are not 100% air tight anyways.

Anyhoo, it's an issue if your car is stationary and there's no air flow around to disperse the exhaust gas away from the car. That's why people die/kill themselves when they're in the car and have the car running in the garage

I don't doubt there are vents in the trunk, but I don't think they're tied into the HVAC system

exactly...

You wouldn't happen to be trying to imply that when one is to "ASSUME", then one makes an "ASS of U and ME", now would you??? (stooges)

hehe...that would be it.

there is a vent in the trunk... but its for letting air OUT of the car... its on the driver side, under the plastic panels, and under the carpet.

The recycled air comes from under the passenger side dash.

Just like pungdum said.. passenger side front. There is also a filter there, that you should change once a year or so. :)

Hmm...I was at an understanding that US-spec models had no filter. TheMAN posted quite an intesive How-To (clubprotege.com) on equipping the US-spec Proteges with the J-Spec filtration system (he's quite intuitive as you may know).

thanks.

my concern on this topic was because i just got a CF hood and i installed some weather stripping under the leading edge of the hood with some weather strip sealant. i'm not sure if that stuff would melt with the heat generated within the engine bay and so i started smelling this faint sour smell and i thought i mabye comimg from the chemical in the sealant..... which probably isn't too good for me if i inhaled too much.
so thats my concern, cause if outside air in NON RECIRCULATING mode was coming in from the engine bay then i might probably die of some chemical accumulation in my body.... but since it seems like it is not coming from the engine bay area then my perception of the sour smell must be just mental.

when its on recycle, it uses the air inside..so u dont get fresh air u just reuse the air inside
