2003.5 Metallic Mazdaspeed Protege
Whatsup guys.....this is my first post on the forum. So yeah I'm getting rid of my 240sx and im looking into getting a MSP. I've done some research around and i think the msp would be a really good car for me. But i want some driver input. It would be greatly apperciated if you guys could give me some good input on how the car performs daily and some ups and downs and maybe some alternatives.
I also was wondering what are some simple upgrades that are the most effective on performance and how much power some can put down.
Thanks guys

It's a great driver car but does require some mods to be reliable and powerful.
The SMIC sucks so either upgrade it or go with a FMIC. The WGA and motor mounts are failure prone, so upgrading those is a good idea. The Internals aren't very strong so can't really handle too much boost. By upgrading the entire system from intake to intake mani, and exhaust from Turbo back with a good tune these cars perform very well.

Front Mount Intercooler. they are about 15.5 1/4 mile stock, fun little car.. but just needs more umph from the factory..

I mean are they fairly reliable on a daily basis?
And i mean would it be just as easy to slap on a less restrictive exhaust, a FMIC and a bigger turbo to get a considerable amount of more power?
sorry for the all the questions but im just trying to figure out if this car is for me. I just want a reliable, quick car.

easy yes, cheap.....thats your problem lol. If your interested I know an orange one around here that has only 36k miles on it. He is askin 11k but i'm sure you could talk him down a little

I'm not gonna try to deter you away from the msp, because I love mine to death

but reliability and mazdaspeed protege aren't necessarily hand in hand....if you take care of the car and treat it right then it will treat you like gold, but know that the lsd will eventually fail on you and it is best to take a preventive measure to replace it with a welded lsd before that happens...otherwise it is a great car and a great daily driver, long as you treat it with respect

be careful with larger turbos on this car however, don't go over 10 psi and stick with a gt28 and youll be fine....there is a WEALTH of information on here about what upgrades are available and what is reliable, research is your friend =)

So true. Mine is a daily driver. I'm only boost 6 psi with stock internals. That's the limit to this motor with the GT28RS. Once I dive in and forge it I'll stay at 12 psi tuned. As is with the mods listed vvvvvvv I'm very happy with the performance and easily pass whoever whenever while daily driving. Here in chicago people like to creep up and attempt a right sided pass from the turning lane while the light is changing. With my mods they can't....It hate that s*** BTW.

you can run 10 psi on a gt28, most run that all day no problem....but yea, better to stay on the safe side

10 Psi on a non forged block?? Is a guanteed blown block!!! that's like running 13-14 Psi with stock T25 and stock block.
10 Psi on a forged block is nothing though.

on a stock block, and yes it is safe....plenty of people run it, including myself in the past

and there is a difference between air pressure and air flow, I just did a long talk about it in another thread....just cause you kick out more horsepower at the same pressure level doesn't mean that it is more unsafe and does not equate to running a higher pressure level on another turbo

but anyways, thats not the point of this thread

Damn...sounds like people in your area love tickets and collisions!!

Chicago Police aren't the biggest fans of Traffic stops, Especially with the recent murders of on-duty officers. Unless your driving like a complete ass they won't pull you over, at least in most districts....and unless they end up rear ending me at the next light there won't be any collisions!!! I find that there pride is usually so crushed that there driving behavior turns down to a normal state.

Thats crazy... ive never seen anyone attempt a pass from the right turn lane. But i guess if people have there s*** together and look out for that type of thing, more power.

hey whatta u guys think about the price of this?
Im almost positive i can talk him down though
what should i ask.
and how much is it to make the lsd fail proof?
