2003.5 MAZDASPEED Protege
I have 2003.5 Protege that I had purchased a few weeks ago. I want to know what is the most HP this car can put out. Is this car capable of 400 whp? I want to have a car that can put 400 whp, that is the reason that I had purchased the car. I was told by the previous owner that the engine had been ported and polished. It also has forged internals and a stage 2 clutch. I was planning on running methanol in it but if the car can't get those numbers then I won't and I might just sell it. I really like the car, but really want a tuner racer. I was looking for a WRX or Evo but I fell in love with this car and was hoping I can make it beast. I would appreciate all input. The car only has 53,000 miles. It also has a Godspeed GT2871R turbo.

I would pull the lower oilpan to check and see first if in fact the rods and pistons are legit. Aftermarket pistons should have their name on the bottom of them as you look up past the rods.

Yes, if you're forged and have standalone engine management, correct tune, and a large hairdryer, and all other supporting mods, then sure. You could get 400whp. Just expect to dump some $$$ into it

A couple guys on here have pretty sick Speeds. Couple in the 400's, one guy on here has 525+hp.
Good luck man!

400 is a ton on a fwd car too. Hopefully the trans is built too or I heard it can grenade and your lsd can pretty much blow up. A kid around here is putting down 260 and he is beating evo's. Like he said above, you can do anything if you have the $$$

yeah just check out brian's mp5t, anything's possible if you have the $ and the know-how.

Unfortunately this car is limited to 399whp, no matter what you do.

lol hopefully your trolling....

In regards to how much power can the car put out, how long is a piece of string? You don't really need to do more research about the car before you can make up your mind. Beast in terms of what? Straightline? autox? Circuit? Targa?

Its more likely that the OP is trolling since its his first post ever. The most hps the car can make is only a matter of how much money you want to spend on it. Setting a goal of 400whp is meaningless however. If you are only interrested in reaching a set amount of horsepower then you could do that much easier with many other cars.

True.

FReak guys I am just trying to figure out what the car can do. I know that as long as you have money anything can be reached but I would like the car for stright line racing. I had a car already that had 430whp and I would love to have it again. Please can you guide me the right way? I see that you all are really great with these cars and that is way I came to this forum. Also what does "OP" mean? I really dont want go much over 400whp becuase of the fact that I think is just pointless in a FWD car. I think I woud just be burning tires up more than really moving or could I be wrong? Thanks.

op = original poster... the weak point on these cars are the internals and the diff both are known and common issues on these cars.

And the trans over 300HP likes to shred gears.

Go for 300-350, its all you really need for a FWD car.

You may have picked the wrong car for what you are looking for. I'm not saying what you're after is unachievable, but it will cost a lot of money and will give you lots and lots of headaches along the way.

Now if you wanted a 250-300 HP daily driver that is a blast to drive, then you'll love the MSP. But as others have said, anything is achievable with enough money, so if you're really serious then go for it. Not very many have achieved those numbers, but a select few definitely have so it's not impossible.

You have the wrong mindset for the MSP, you say you must own a car with 400hp, it must be faster than an EVO or STi or you will sell it? You remind me of some of the kids I went to high school with. Not everything is about how much whp your car has, the MSP has a soul that you feel when you drive it that other cars definitely don't and never will have.

I think an EVO or STi is really what you are looking for.

Cheapest way to 400whp is the SRT4, unless you buy someone else's failed project. Not much to debate there. I've seen SRT4's trap in the high teens with very little modification.

I've seen an EvoIX trap 126mph as well, so that is also an option, but that's not happening without some serious coin since EvoIX's don't sell for less than 20k unless something is wrong with them. I've seen a handful of Evo's go home on trailers as well and I am sure the repairs were not cheap.

If your goal was a street killer, you bought the wrong car. Maxx Mazda put more time/money/care/effort into a build than anyone on his last build and it promptly shredded 3rd gear.

Out of curiosity, what was your 430whp car and why do you no longer have it?

i hear the turbo cobalt ss is also a pretty good choice for a go fast car to mod. From what i understand they are built kind of like the srt4

Yes, nice cars indeed. Before the wife and I bought our Speed3 we were looking to get an SS Cobalt. In a way I am glad we got the Speed3, liked it more anyways.

MMMM I THINK THAT WILL BE EASIER TO GET THOSE HPS WITH OTHER CAR, OR IF YOU'RE WILLING TO SPEND MONEY WITH THE MSP, CUZ WILL BE A LOT =s
