Things move pretty fast at 2000+ rpm. Almost anything can happen when a belt breaks. My sister's old Neon had a similar instance. Bent 3 valves.
Neon engines always were interference design. VERY interference. The Neon forums I used to frequent were vigilant about reminding people to replace the timing belt every 50-60k miles, specifically because of it.
It used to be a frequent occurrence, also, when Neon owners would have their car in the shop for some other issue (most commonly replacing the crappy factory headgasket) and the mechanic doing the work torqued the cam gear bolt(s) waaaay too tight for spec (which was a lot lower than you'd think) - a few miles down the road on the way home the bolt would snap, cam gear(s) would spin free, and valvetrains were destroyed. (I'm nearly certain that's the sequence of events - it's been 6 years plus since I had a Neon and my old forum doesn't exist anymore.)
Also, (and I know it's off-topic), I really like parentheses. (Apparently.)
