What have you done to your MSP today?

well i lost out on the p5 wheels. someone said a few pages back they found a pick and pull that had lots of proteges in pa. any more word on that?

Damian (boostdprotegelx) and I changed the fuel pump (upgrade to Walbro 255lph), replaced the rear motor mount (AWR 70 duro), and replaced the vacuum check valve between banks 1 & 2 yesterday. After the install of the Walbro 255lph, my top end has improved drastically.

This didn't really solve the problem, (P0170 - bank 1 too lean), but it DID help me identify what I believe to be the main culprit - a faulty fuel pressure regulator.

It makes sense because a failure of the fuel pressure regulator would cause cylinder 1 to be lean because it's the furthest cylinder down the fuel rail and would suffer the most if the fpr can't keep up the fuel pressure.

My idle has been terrible because if the fpr has failed, then the fuel pressure wouldn't be steady and the car wouldn't be able to maintain a smooth idle. The car would try to compensate by putting cylinders 1 injector on a higher duty cycle (or something equally oddball). This has been causing the inevitable "dip" in rpm at idle which causes the car to nearly die out almost every time I get off the throttle. Also, the reason my top end has improved dramatically is because past a certain range the Walbro 255lph pump is pushing enough fuel at high rpms to compensate for the fpr not doing its job.

I have always had -18 to -20 mm/Hg in vacuum at idle, and that hasn't changed so I'm reasonably sure it's not a vacuum leak. I ordered a new fpr today. Wish me luck! I really think this must be the problem.

Maybe this would be a good excuse to justify a new fuel rail (Perrin?), LOL!

I got the fpr today, will install it in about 2 hours. I'll let you all know how it goes.

I know the P0170 code has been a major problem for a lot of MSP owners. I really hope this is the solution, because I am seriously at my wit's end. I have no idea what else the problem could be. I have replaced all my injectors, the fuel pump, the enitre electrical harness, IAC solenoid, MAF, both O2 sensors, and my EGR valve (new one is Canadian model). Still, the code persists and the car runs like poop. What gets me the most is that I know my car is a beast when she's running right. I have almost no power at all right now. I get toasted by base model civics and such. Hits me right int he chest to see my baby limping along like this.

I am seriously praying for divine help to make sure the FPR fixes the problem. Please send some positive vibes my way!

PLEASE let us know if your fpr fixes it. I think just about everyone is getting that P0170 code!

I am on a mission to determine the cause and solution of this code issue. I'll keep everyone updated on any progress. I've already eliminated about 8-10 possibilities. If the FPR doesn't do it, I think I'll replace my primary O2 sensor (again) and then try the intake manifold gasket and try replacing the IAC valve body (I've only replaced the solenoid).


Does anybody know what the Fuel Injector Pressure Damper does? it's the bulby-looking thing on the driver's-side end of the fuel rail. Mine has a yellow cap on it. I wonder if it could be the problem.

Im pretty sure its called a fuel pulsation dampner not pressure. From what i remember that keeps the flow smooth, cause not all injectors fire at the same time, it creates pulsation in the fuel so that unit counteracts the pulseations and creates a smoother flow.

Id imagine it wouldnt be the issue. I could be wrong but if it failed it woul probably leak, otherwise i cant imagine it would cause that big of a deal, most aftermarket fuel rails eliminate them altogether.
 
went on the gmr mountain run with some friends. it was sick! i want to just set my car up for toge now. must buy hd cam!
