What have you done to your MSP today?

installed cams, And installed timeing belt, and installed crank pully, and water pump pulley.... Fun day today.

Gonna go to a weld shop tomorrow to get a 1in opening welded onto the intake. So i can run the rdv. I know the opening on the turbolife is 1.25". Not sure if ill need 1.25: opening on the intake or 1in will be fine. Anyone got some info on this?

The pressure released from the RDV is being released through a 1" tube, so 1" at the intake is fine.

i love mountain driving we got alot of good roads u can just open up on its fun

yeah. i need to go later though. to many cars coming up. or next time i need to take more cars and have one at the top and one at the bottom signaling if someone is comin

Wow...

You did put a full 4qts of oil in, yes?

And seriously, a lift is not needed for an oil change. That's f'in ridiculous. Not to be a dick, but get your hands dirty... Lol, I've never worked on a car with a lift. Yes, it would be nice. But for a 15 minute job like an oil change? Not really necessary... (boom08)

I used royal purple so I only used 3 and a half quarts since it is so thick. The manual actually calls for 3.75 quarts anyway. IMO a lift is not f'in ridiculous. What is ridiculous is the placement of the filter. Also I have no problem getting my hands dirty since I've already installed my FMIC and valve cover entirely by myself with only a jack.

edit: oh and a pair of slim fans for which my dad and I removed the radiator.

You can reach the filter from the top of the bay with the 626 mani on. Still have to get under to clean up but it makes removing the filter very easy.

I'm fairly certain I finally diagnosed the source of my problem (Code P0171 - "Bank 1 Too Lean"). The symptoms seem to point to a failed vacuum check valve located between bank 1 and bank 2 on the intake manifold. Damian (boostdprotegelx) and I will be replacing this next Sunday. Will let you all know how it goes.

I know this code has been the source of many mystery issues and much stress for quite a few fellow MSP owners. Maybe this relatively cheap fix ($25 part from Mazda) will help alleviate some of the stress we have been experiencing due to this code.

I'm interested to hear the results of this. I have a turbo'd auto and I get that CEL occasionally as well...

Funny I have this cel right now.

Makes my idle rather lean, and my vacuum isn't as low as it should be.

keep us updated.

yea..i have the same problem occasionally, please let us know what you find

Okay, UPDATE-

Damian (boostdprotegelx) and I changed the fuel pump (upgrade to Walbro 255lph), replaced the rear motor mount (AWR 70 duro), and replaced the vacuum check valve between banks 1 & 2 yesterday. After the install of the Walbro 255lph, my top end has improved drastically.

This didn't really solve the problem, (P0170 - bank 1 too lean), but it DID help me identify what I believe to be the main culprit - a faulty fuel pressure regulator.

It makes sense because a failure of the fuel pressure regulator would cause cylinder 1 to be lean because it's the furthest cylinder down the fuel rail and would suffer the most if the fpr can't keep up the fuel pressure.

My idle has been terrible because if the fpr has failed, then the fuel pressure wouldn't be steady and the car wouldn't be able to maintain a smooth idle. The car would try to compensate by putting cylinders 1 injector on a higher duty cycle (or something equally oddball). This has been causing the inevitable "dip" in rpm at idle which causes the car to nearly die out almost every time I get off the throttle. Also, the reason my top end has improved dramatically is because past a certain range the Walbro 255lph pump is pushing enough fuel at high rpms to compensate for the fpr not doing its job.

I have always had -18 to -20 mm/Hg in vacuum at idle, and that hasn't changed so I'm reasonably sure it's not a vacuum leak. I ordered a new fpr today. Wish me luck! I really think this must be the problem.

Maybe this would be a good excuse to justify a new fuel rail (Perrin?), LOL!

thinking of buying the turbohoses smic and getting spal slimline fans when i get my check in the fall, any thoughts? who has the turbohoses smic?

ya, I had the CustomMSP smic and the WR hardpipes, overall I wish I would have gone with the FMIC kit as Wagon stated above first, but then again, I didn't really know much about the car since my first installs were the smic/hardpipes/cai, but I just finished installing the fmic kit and it is so much better/cleaner/nicer.. for the most part, it does take some work, I took about 2 weeks to get mine in but that is really only because I had to wait for some welding for the BOV flange and a bracket, and then I had to order couplers, twice, but go to the link in wagon's sig, and actually I forgot to post there what my end results for pipes and couplers were so ya... I would do that

What does brand have to do with viscosity? (crazy)

Just put in the full 4 qts. In a month you'll likely be down to ~3.5-3.75 anyways. The filter isn't really in that bad of a location. Ya, Some cars are much easier to get at, but most are in a sort of awkward spot (many are worse than the fs-de location). I will say that the one time I tried to get a filter wrench onto the fs-de filter, it wasn't cooperating; but I change all my own oil and make sure not to over tighten. Like Fish said, those cheap garden/all purpose gloves with the rubber coating are money for gripping a stuck oil filter.
