What have you done to your MSP today?

I couldn't drive the MSP until I figure out what my new problem is, so I spent some time detailing the engine bay...

Laser Blue - Did u pop the hood and check the mount. I dont see how the mount can break. They're pretty solid.

Yeah... I put the car up on jackstands; all four corners. I crawled the length of the car, checking everything: swaybar, endlinks, exhaust and hangers, shifter & linkage, mounts, and anything else I could reach. The mounts haven't broken where they bolt up, but I wondered if the centers could shred enough for drivetrain lash to move the motor or tranny enough to hit some other stationary part. But I couldn't find any indication of anything like that, so I'm stumped.

Has anyone here ever had the driver side/transmission mount break/fail on their car? How did you know? What did it feel like when driving?

I hit a pot hole the other day and now I have this noise every time I hit the gas or let off it while in gear. No issues when just rolling downhill in neutral or with the clutch in and sticking the brake hard; only when the tranny is "engaged". The car still shifts normally and the clutch works fine but I hear this metal to metal "knock" sound when hitting the gas or letting off the gas. Any ideas?

my guess is a bad axle. could have popped out of the trans just enough to cause a noise, w/out you seeing it. or maybe a bearing...metal/metal could def be a bearing.

I just parked mine Friday to diagnose something that sounds like that. Since I have a second car and absolutely zero time I do not know what is up yet. Hoping to get under there this week and check it out. I first suspected my mount, but I really don't know yet.

I was thinking bearing too. It must have been a big pothole or u hit it hard.

Has anyone dynoed their msp with the 505 IM yet?? Just curious.

bearing would make noise anytime the car is rolling though, no? He as well as I only have the noise when acceleration is first applied. I've had bad CVs on my old 626 and they clicked.

Took the MSP to Nashville for autox where we ran the infield track at the Nashville Superspeedway.... was an absolute blast! The MSP took down my friends STI for the 2nd event in a row (drive2)

My stock Lug nuts are starting to lose the coating on them and are starting to rust. What type of lug nuts would you all recommend? I am looking for a cheap but good aftermarket set try to keep them under 50 bucks!

not always. and often not at first. i've seen many come in for beginning sound..but deadens w/ speed. it's weird. there's so many things. i'm going w/ axle or bearing.. unless its the mount.which should be pretty easy to diagnose if he looked(as he mentioned)

Axle sounds plausible... I'll check it closer tomorrow. If it was a bearing, which bearing? Not a wheel bearing. I can tell its not that.

wheel bearing would get louder the faster u drive. most times. i replced both sides. the pass side would drown out my radio. it sucked. so i dont think its a wheel bearing. i could be wrong

damn, if I wasn't planing on buying a Gtspec strut bar, I'd prob. get a set of these orange lug nuts!.. orange mania
oh, and they say MX5/6 miata, but they will fit the msp right? i would assume so, or else you wouldn't be buying them ?..

Ordered carbon fiber part,

Sold S and J pipe most likly.

Made 80 or so pcs. on a CNC machine. :D

Last isnt MSP related though!

BUT! we got a new CNC machine in... I can actually make pullys on it! haha :D

So, I found the problem... much less serious than it might have been! A bolt had vibrated loose in the engine support bracket that runs front to back and is just above the larger cross-brace that runs side to side. Drivetrain lash was making the larger cross brace bump that bolt that was hanging down. I had to remove the larger brace to retighten the bolts on the smaller brace and then re-install the large brace. Problem solved!

yeah they'll fit, the pitch thread is the same. I'm trying to find orange caliper paint but haven't had any luck yet

went with g2, kinda pricey but my friend used it on his ms3 and they look good after 2 years

17 hours worth of work over the weekend accomplished the following:
  • Struts all the way around
  • Brake rotors and pads all the way around
  • Rear sway bar bushings
  • Front control arms and ball joints
  • Left and right outer tie rod ends
  • Front right wheel bearing (left axle was stuck, goes to the shop tomorrow)
  • Sway bar end links all the way around
  • Swapped the summer wheels on
