What are the benefits of the Test Pipe?

I know it speaks for itself, but I hear mixed reviews of installing the test pipe. Is there a real noticeable sound difference in the exhaust, as in being deeper and/or throater? What about power wise too? I just ordered the test pipe from Protege Garage, so I'm curious. Thanks.

It def sounds deeper/ more throaty. I can't tell you a ton about the gains because I went from a stock tune to stage 2 the next day. I've read that there are some decent mid range gains with the TP. The best thing about the TP is you can run stage 2 with that and a cbe.

Thats good. I'm looking forward to it. Silver Spring huh? I'm from Towson. I went to college Park and moved out to the Desert. I have a good friend that lives right off of University Blvd and random places off of Route 1 in College park too.

When did you go to CP? I was there from 2000-2002, took a little hiatus and now I'm back full time.

I was at CP from 2000 to 2002, then I transfered to UMBC and graduated from there. My best friend moved here to Las Vegas for work, so I followed when I finished school. I was home in Baltimore 3 weeks ago.

So the exhaust sounds a lot nicer with the Test Pipe then?

The sound difference in minimal. The real "benefit" of the Test Pipe is to get the second cat restriction out of the exhaust so the engine can breath. The 2nd cat has a very small opening in the inlet which restricts the exhaust flow, especially at high rpms. There is a real SOTP improvement from the test pipe.

I can't say positively, but IMO Mazda added the restriction after testing showed the turbo would let oil past the seals if there wasn't enough backpressure on the turbine side.

I agree with Forzda on this one. Direct Injection has proven to be incredibly efficient fueling technology with regard to emissions. Mazda could have very easily gotten away with one catalytic converter.

i just installed mine about 2 months ago and honestly only you will know there is a TP installed. it just sounds a lil deeper thru a few rpm's but yes you do feel the gains. i did the install with my buddy and he handed me the test pipe and i handed him the cat and he gasped at how heavy the thing was and how restrictive it looked.. it's a great mod for how cheap and easy it goes in..

i have heard that it gets loud when a CBE is installed.. has anyone taken it back off and put the stock cat back on or bought a resonator? i am planning on buying a corksport cbe soon..

Without the second cat using the Corksport CBE, you will definitely want to buy the Corksport resonated "Race Pipe." I know it seems like overpaying versus other test pipes, but if you don't the car is just too damned loud to drive on the highway.

well looks like my tp will be up for sale later this fall. good thing i decided to buy used!

I would think that replacing the test pipe would resemble the exhaust note of the Speed 3 maybe? But obviously not as restricted though. Mine is ordered from Protege Garage. I should have it early next week.

It's not a big difference sound wise, but it does add more drone imo. I hardly had any w/ the GHL w/ res, but def some w/ the TP. Nothing that will drive you crazy though. I'm sure you'll be happy with it =)
