Well....I ****** up

makes some sense that it wasn't totalled....since he used to work at that shop and he didn't want it to be totalled in the first place. he probably had his hand in the estimate and might be doing some of the work himself to save money, because there is no possible way his whole front end is busted up like that and only cost 7,200 (which should include labor), and mine was limited to one corner and fender and was estimated at 14,000 (see post 42)

my concern after getting that "fixed" would be future drivability issues. if the frame is tweaked at all, or if something damaged hadn't been noticed right away, there are gonna be problems

If the frame is not bent, I am stunned. 1st pic kind of shows it not damaged, weird. But the crumpled fender near the driver's door leads me to believe once this care is stripped down, and the parts tally goes up, they will total it. Makes sure OEM parts, not cheap crap is put on. And New at that. I have seen used stuff used before. That hard of an impact, it looks like the suspension might be compromised in some way, too.

There she goes....

i am amazed they didn't total it... surprising.

the damage must look worse than it actually is.

i dunno.... every instance i've been involved with in bringing one back from the dead, straighten the frame/body, resulted in a car that just didn't feel or drive right afterward.... or ate tires, weird problems, etc. you could get one to look good again, but it just didn't drive the same. i guess technology has changed.

i don't think i could hang on to one for long after it was fixed after a pounding like that. maybe for myself, but not one the mrs. would be driving with the kid, just not worth the risk. in my opinion the cars these days aren't really made to be rebuilt, but to save your life.

i'm glad you are ok. these things seem to hold up well in a crash.

a big plus is you have a shop that is your friend.

Can't believe it's not totalled!

Stop crashing our cars people! INSURANCE IS GOING TO SKYROCKET!

(getout)

Insurance estimator called. The supplement claim that the body shop filed was for.......$10,000. Apparently our headlights on the GT are about 800 each. They are currently re-valuing the car to see if it is or is not totalled. This brings the total damage to 17k+.

I am not very happy right now.

Just a heads up with unibody cars such as ours. Anytime you take a pretty good whack on the front there will be damage to the rear of the unibody, this is how the unibody dissipates impacts, often times the opposite rear section from the front hit will bow up. This is what causes most of the drivability problems/handling and tire ware issues to unibody cars that are fixed after significant frontal impact. A good body and frame man will know this and work on correcting the problems but it is usually missed or not completely corrected.
I used to sell and train on frame straitening equipment for Snap On for 5 years and saw this issue time and again. Just a thought.

well, all the body panels still line up perfect. Body shop checked the frame and there is no frame damage. It was a pretty slow wreck. Headlights, Turbo, Intercooler, Intake Mani are what killed this car.

Oh, and the 138 dollar battery box.

Sorry to hear that they might total it but that might be for the best. It would always be in the back of my mind that the car was in a accident and something would always feel wrong to me and it would never be the same.

For the money you are going to get for it, go out and buy a G8 GT. That is the car I'd get if my MS3 got totaled tomorrow.

The new MS3s are FUGLY, and I'd never buy one used.
