The Scirocco is going down a treat. Two years after it was launched, VW held a small ceremony at its Palmela plant in Portugal to celebrate building the 100,000th new Scirocco.

"The Scirocco is one of the most important cars that we produce. For myself personally, it was a moving moment", said plant manager Andreas Hinrichs.

For the record, the landmark car is a firebreathing Scirocco R, painted in the firms striking Rising Blue paint.

Since 1974, 895,650 Scirocco have been built, with production of the previous two generations of the car ending in 1992. Todays Scirocco is built alongside the Eos and the new Sharan.

Big seller, but not for the U.S. Annoying.

VW thinks it will steal sales away from both the GTi and Golf R here in the States.

The U.S. will always be a 2nd-tier market for small, nimble cars (especially hatches). We have the pickup, SUV, and vanilla family sedan market cornered, however...

That will all change when a gallon of gas goes over $5.

I don't think so. The truck and suv sales will slow big time, but once people get use to the price they'll still buy them. Too many construction workers, ranchers in this country. They'll just by a DD.

I think it will effect truck sales in my area because 90% of pickups and SUVs are used as dds.
