So I understand Variable Valve Timing adjusts the timing based on the engine speed and load to get better power gains. But what is VVT entail? Why can't you just equip our basically the same FS-DE engines with VVT to get better performance?

Well, if Mazda made a FS engine with variable valve timing then we may could take the head off of it and put it on ours, but I dunno if Mazda ever made an FS engine with it. On Honda engines, you can take the VTEC head off of one engine, and put it on a non VTEC engine, with a few modifications. Alot of people do that, expecially with the B18 engines.

It's a little more involved than that. The ECM controls the whole thing, so at a minimum, you've got a computer swap, which also entails a new wiring harness for the extra VVT wiring controls and such. This is just the beginning. There's a lot more to it than just this, anyone else know what's really involved? probably a ton of things I didn't list here.
