US Diesel's big splash introduction

Rotary is still in the works for Mazda

Last I heard was a possible steady state rotary/hybrid combo. Not particularly interested. Sounds expensive, fussy etc.

Likely price me out with that complexity as opposed to a far more mainstream 6 coupe with a 2.5L. And without the maintenance/oil devouring/complexity/reliability etc issues and costs.

My search for alternatives to Mazda's CX-5 diesel continues and then this new Ford caught my eye. I have to say that at first I thought no, but then as I scrolled through the photos it is starting to grow on me and now I think it has a cool factor.

What do you guys think?

Looks like a cross between a Ford Transit van and a Skoda Yeti

CX-5 is much better looking

Each to their own

Cool Factor - if you think panel vans are cool. :)

If you want a diesel and don't care what it looks like, then you found your vehicle. You can always get a nice advertisement wrap on the sides too.

I don't hate it, but I would not try to compare to any SUV. I see it as a minivan/van mix. It is made for hauling stuff - people or materials.

First off - its very hard to find passenger ones. 2nd if you have kids they will hate you growing up due to NVH on long drives, plus handling will be awful. Ofcourse you will be the butt of all jokes. If you use it as a daily - there is more pain for you.

Finally on the plus side - it can be a very nice camper vehicle for a small family. You can tag a tent to it much like old Elements had kits.
Dont forget its a Ford. piece o crap in quality and their EPA # and real world are totally different.

Selling that with both hands..30mpg highway..waat? Hey kids check out my new dorkmobile..it stands out but not in a good way for me.

I have a felling CX5 diesel is not coming. It was an attempt at a low hanging fruit - if MZD could sell 16K more diesel CX5s and maybe spike interest, they would be tapping into rural markets or smaller cities where they have no presence. Folks not in city and driving hills - will love a diesel torque + if it gets a 3000 lb tow rating in US that would mean cheaper alternative for people with some boats etc to haul.

After seeing FCA have issues and lie about meeting EPA #s I cant see Mazda doing it or bringing it in. Its sad - because it builds expectations and takes a dump on them. This hurts them, i am surprised they did not build the 6 2.5 T expectations and it is being released, still think CX5 2.5L has the best tuned transmission in the MZD lineup 3 6 CX3 and CX5. Thats a big plus and folks looking at diesel need to test drive 2.5L for low end torque.

This is the only van that's excited me. Saw one in person in a parkinglot and it got me all breathing hard. Looks like a badass off-grid wagon!

Quigley is the company that makes the conversions.

Honestly, my 2.5L gas-burner does just fine on hills. My drive way is about 200' long, and so steep that you cannot make it up without a running start in some vehicles (will make it half way and just spin/slide, even in dry nice weather). My AWD CX5 handles it at 12-1400rpm just fine. Even in snow. Even with 3/32 left on my CrossContact LX20's. Except one day when it was FRESH SNOW, I could not. Waited until the next day and it was fine. Very odd.

Yeah, 1980s TV was full of machine guns and dodging bullets.
