Univeral Exhaust fit?

How does a universal exhaust fit into our cars? What extra parts do we need to get a universal muffler and tip to fit into our stock setup? Do we need to find some sort of pipe to connect the universal muffler to where the axel back connected?

Why would one want to cut off a near new, stainless steel muffler and pipe just to kludge together a bunch of "universal fit" non-stainless exhaust system components???

Obviously, I'm missing something here . . . . .

You can buy stainless universal fit mufflers (FlowMaster comes to mind), but your question is still pretty valid. Unless the stock muffler has been damaged somehow and needs to be replaced, I can't understand the reasoning either.
By the time you purchase the SS muffler and tip, and have the appropriate piping bent to fit between the new muffler and the axle back flange, you are nearly at the cost for a SS axle back exhaust system anyway. I'll bet the sport tuned exhaust from Mazda at $220 US is nearly equal to what you could piece together from the parts shelves.
I've been down this path for my '97 Civic that has developed a breach in the pipe right before the muffler that is in near perfect condition. A new axle back exhaust from the Honda dealer is $189 uninstalled. The local Tuffy shop was nearly the same for parts with an employee discount. By the way, the original SS exhaust on my '92 Saturn was still solid at 134,000 miles. Jim

My reasoning is that the universal mufflers come way cheaper. I see them for $130-$150 or so. Then, custom piping (just found out) will go for $60-90 CDN. This ends up keeping me around $200 CDN. If I go for the MS solution, it tends to be quite a bit more. Unless my quotes for the MS rear section are poor.

Why don't you go to your dealer parts dept and order one of these for about 200 dollars and then all you have to do is bolt it on.

MazdaSpeed USA sport muffler (manufactured by Bosal):
for Protege: part # 0000-8M-C09
for Protege 5: part # 0000-8M-C10

Skunk2 Universal Muffler - $240
Custom 2.5" Piping - $100 bucks

Sounds and looks ALOT better than the MazdaSpeed, more unique, plus i have the piping im gonna need ;)

your choice
