UNICHIP ENGINE MANAGEMENT - Answers from Jack at unichip.us

Man this thing is going on my easy, effective, and "fairly" affordable mods list.
All I will need with it is an exhaust, an IC and an intake. Then I will be happy.
Of course I allready have my MBC :)

Ok something else I just found. In an old thread someone said that the unichip ups the boost 3 PSI over stock. So does that means that the boost is set to 9.5 PSI from 6.5 PSI stock??. One last bit that conserns me. If the Unit Chip controls boost then how can it be 100% PnP? You would still have to tap the wastegate line right? (uhm)

Anyone have experience with this product in other turbo cars? I've not heard of them. Seems like a great mod if it just plugs in and can be popped out in minutes again without a trace. Perfect for this car. I'd be concerned about pinging with this thing on there. Will this be an issue?

If it seems like I am trying to discredit this unit I apollogize. I am just trying to find out as much as I can before I buy.
I just literally seconds away from ordering a greddy profec b for $315, but if this unit can be a boost controller as well as tune the car then I would rather go this route.

Now if only it would work on the non-turbo cars. . .just getting our cars to expect a little boost, would make piggybacks and FMU's a lot easier to work with! One would think (or I just hope) that if they can program a better MSP program, then us non-MSPs can benefit from it as well.

from my understanding the dyno Binary posted was stock vs stock +unichip only. call up Corksport and talk to them.

Dont know #1 is expensive for a piggy back that only has like 2 setting (I think)

#2 I like full standalone cuz you get full control fo your vehicle and you can customize settings to your liking. I would love to program the speed at like 5 psi for daily driving and saving gas and boost more for drag racing and somewhere in between for autoX.

Other then that it looks very promising and good name/people I would turst tuning my speed. But then again I would also trust local supra specialist Titan motorsport or Enjuku with tuning my standalone or piggyback. I would like someont local just to have someone to b**** to ASAP if somethign went wrong.

I am interested in this unit but have a couple of questions on the following excerpt from the Cork sport website:

This is in the final process of development. Developed in conjunction with Pineapple Racing, Unichip, and Cork Sport. Tune your car without having to take it to the dyno! The first and only piggy-back fuel/timing computer for the Protege! Switch between two pre set map settings with included switch.( Whats this switch all about, can someone explain more?)
Specifically set/tuned to work with Cork Sport 'Power Series' product line (exhaust, intake, etc). Can be reprogrammed at a later time (by specified outlets). (I have a custom 2.5" catback and an apex d/p on the way so do I tell them that when I order? I guess what am trying to ask is how do you order it?)

My guess is like what it says. The switch switches between 2 fuel/timing maps. 1 might be conservative stock psi, thus stock performance and the other may be for better prformance like boosting 9psi or something like that. Kinda like how mopar stage 2 has that 100 octane switch wich switched the ECU to high octane maps....but I dont think the second map would be for high octane.

do search cuz I think it was explained that you tell them what mod you have and they program its specificly to your mods. I do not know if it has to be corksport...they might just throw that in to boost sales "tunned speciffically for the power series stuff" You get a new mod...you send that backt o them to be reprogramed.

If anyone gets it they should def do a write up and dyno the car...to make sure everything is okay and working correctly.

Interesting...I wonder how much for the reprogramming for the exhaust and other mods after you get the pnp for a stock msp.

so this would increase hp and cure the hesitation for us unflashed? have 2 settings, one for conservation and the other for performance? and cost about 800 bucks? seems like a good performance upgrade, but i would like more test done, not just by the company, but by other people with msp's.

OT:
not flaming or singleing you out, but i find this state of mind strange. if everyone thought like this... no one would buy anything. common people step up.

this seems interesting... i may be up for this... i gotta find a local unichip tuner first.

Wow, I can't wait. It keeps sounding better and better. I do wish I knew if that chart was with the boost @ 9 PSI or not. I was thinking of getting the apex dp this week, but I think now I'll go with all corksport parts (that is if they EVER release their turboback.)

I'm in the process of writing a reply back to Jack with the questions you all have asked. I'd like to see more of the questions answered so everybody knows whats going on.

Here is a copy of the reply I sent to Jack with some of your questions -

Jack,
Thank you for responding so quickly. You have answered all of my
questions, but may I ask you to answer some others?
Currently I am a member of www.msprotege.com , the largest Mazda Protege and Mazdaspeed Protege community on the internet. I relayed your message to my fellow forum members about the project and have gotten a very positive response. You can actually read the entire thread here -

http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=61306&page=1&pp=15.

It seems as though many people have more questions than even I did, which is no suprise since many people don't know much about your product. I know you are a busy man and have a company to run, but I would like to know if I could get some more information for others in my community, as the idea of a PnP unit for the Protege has been a dream for all ever since the car has been released.
Most of the people have been getting their information about this unit
through Corksport and their website. If you would bare with me for a moment I would like to rely some questions from fellow Mazdaspeed owners. If it is
alright with you, you could just reply to me and I will relay the information
to the board or you or one of your employees could register and answer their
questions.
A PnP unit that works on the Protege would be a VERY lucrative part of
the market for your company and I would like to see this go over well in the
community just as you would.

Here are some questions sir:

1.Switch between two pre set map settings with included switch.( Whats this switch all about, can someone explain more?)

2.Specifically set/tuned to work with Cork Sport 'Power Series' product line
(exhaust, intake, etc). Can be reprogrammed at a later time (by specified
outlets). (I have a custom 2.5" catback and an apex d/p on the way so do I tell them that when I order? I guess what am trying to ask is how do you order it?)

3.In an old thread someone said that the unichip ups the boost 3 PSI over
stock. So does that means that the boost is set to 9.5 PSI from 6.5 PSI
stock??. One last bit that conserns me. If the Unit Chip controls boost then
how can it be 100% PnP? You would still have to tap the wastegate line right?

4. I'd be concerned about pinging with this thing on there. Will this be an
issue?

5.How much for the reprogramming for the exhaust and other mods after you get the pnp for a stock Mazdaspeed?

6.Will it control my 460cc injectors?

7.I do wish I knew if that dyno chart was with the boost @ 9 PSI or not.
That is all I have for now sir. Thank you for the quick response and hopefully
yourself and I can make this a reality for more Protege owners.

Ben

Looks good, but for my money it has to be user-programmable. For those of us who are gradually building the car, it would be a massive pain to send the thing in every time. I also have to think it would be impossible for them to completely optimize the maps without having MY exact car and mods on the dyno.

Peace...(hippy)

call your local dyno's alot of them can tune unichips, i have several friends who can. we used them in subarus alot. anyone near turboxs can have them do it.
