turboing an auto P5

im probably going to be picking up a levelten torque converter for my auto p5 if i decide to go through with building my turbocharger setup but not that transmission kit .... although im not sure yet...

what is a level ten? would it be necessary? It's possible that I'll have a turbo as well. If I have to do this, I'd like to know.
Thanks

Sounds interesting. Maybe the reason not a lot of response, probably few auto P5.

Psyke:

You should either PM or search for ILMP5 on going turbo with an automatic tranny. He might have some info for you.

I have spoken about this with other members in the forum(F/I) section, and my initial responce was dont waste your time and money. The reason I stated this is because of the huge drivetrain inefficiencies and losses(like 25%) Also we all know how an automatic sucks up the all the power out of the holeshot and lack of crisp shifting. These are a few of the many things to consider when boosting an auto. Also what about the reliability and ability to safely hold the type of torque levels a turbo will add?. I think, the best way to remedy the lack of smooth shifting and to make that slush box a little more efficient is by upgrading the torque converter. Perhaps this would solve the main problems associated with an auto but I would not personally turbo an auto for the above mentioned reasons. Yes it is true that auto does provide an advantage sometimes with a turbo car like keeping the turbo spooled ect And many TT Supra guys have some badd ass auto's running fast times, but the consensus amonst there circles is that the auto still has to much drivetrain loss and reliability issues arise when upping the torque drastically over stock hp levels.
My 2 cents

spoolinmp3, I disagree. If you're looking for an all out drag car, I'd take an auto any day!! Think about it... some of the best drag cars are auto. Like Buick GNs, A4 T/As, etc. If I were to build up a FWD drag car, Id definately turbo an auto. No doubt. You can spool up the turbo and launch, and the torque converter will rob some of the power... but just enough to reduce some of the nasty wheel hop thats associated with high rpm clutch dumps! And when the TQ finally gets it all together, your engine is making boost and your tires are hooked up. Woo! If you get your transmission built... an auto is definately the way to go for the strip.

But if I were looking for something for the track... id avoid auto like the plague. Most of us want something well rounded so a stick would be better... but some of us who are married/engaged need to please our significant others but still want to have fun. Thats the boat Im in. Sometime in the distant future if the car is still around Ill gut it, turbo it, and turn it into a strip king. But until then its groceries and errands for me! GOing fast for me on the street isnt appealing anyways... too many other cars and pedestrians... so Id sooner just spend the turbo money on a beater autox car and have some real fun without worry.

Yes if you have a custom air shifted getrag drag tranny or a GN/Supra with a fully built tranny that has been cryotreated or rebuilt with forged pieces and sports beefed up torque converters than I would have to agree that auto is better all the way for the dragstrip. But we dont have GN's or 20,000 dollar trannies. Unless You beef up that automatic and get less power soak via a different torque convereter, I would not reccomend it. And wheel hop is not caused by a manual tranny, you can get that with an auto too(change out the mounts for wheel hop) Secondly most guys that have there cars are not ultimate strip only warriors but probably use there cars daily with the occasional autoX and strip race. In this case it would be more beneficial to have a manual tranny.
Finaly an auto works well if its bulletproof and then the motor will need a shitload of torque and power to make it a viable candidate, like a Grand National or Supra.
I have driven various auto turbo cars and have not been impressed. I have driven a civic turbo in auto and what a nightmare! Tranny problems, such as power soak, slipping and crunching. I dont know how are trannies will hold up but I do not have much confidence. Then on the contrary I have been in a fully auto built supra(about 6000$ worth of upgrades on the tranny alone) And that thing is a beast on the wholeshot but still cannot run with a 6speed on the highway with similar mods.
