Turbo Timers

I am a newbie to the turbo world, have always had N/A's. I hear people talking about turbo timers and so on. What exactly does a turbo timer do? Is there anything else I should get for my car other then then turbo timer that would help out? Thanks for all your help guys.

Matt

turbo timer basically senses (oil?) temperature in the turbo, and leaves the engine running long enough to cool the oil.. then automatically shuts your car off..

this way you don't have to sit in your car for the 45 sec to 5 min cooldown period lol..

DITTO! I don't think they sense oil. You just set them to your liking. It allows the oil to cool down the turbo. Very good thing to have!

I agree. . .treat it decent and it doesn't matter. But if you're likely to run boosting all the way into your driveway and then not have the time to wait a minute or two, then you deserve to blow your cash on a timer! :D

They are not needed....however we have them on sale for $75
Greddy units. They are more a conversation piece than anything else

i got mine mainly because of the timing functions.

i ran a 0-60 of 7.4 today. still working on the launch, but getting better, previous best was 7.8

I didn't buy a turbo timer due to the fact that my alarm system has it built in. Gotta love Computstar!

Before I say anything else, are you saying that turbotimers are useless?

I've used mine a LOT.. I've disconnected it since I took the car in to the dealership for an alarm issue. I didn't want them saying the alarm malfunctioned due to my tapping into the ignition wiring. Although now I don't remember which wires go to what, so I'm waiting on reinstalling it.

Which wire is the speed sensor wire.

I bought one just so I would have something to match the boost controller. Also so old people can tell me my car is still running after I locked the doors.

Hmm, so all a turbo timer does is let your car run so the turbo can cool while you go inside? There are no other functions of the turbo timer, because I hear about these all over the place.

Matt

Some have built in boost gauges, timers for 1/4mile, voltage meters, etc. But it basically boils down to keeping the car on while you go inside, yes.

OK, here is the real function of a turbo timer. Oil is supplied to a turbo for the bearing in the center shaft. When oil is hot and cools rapidly, it can "coke" the bearings, and wear out the bearing. To remedy this, the car should be allowed to cool down the oil slowly by allowing the car idle. Now, you could sit in the car and wait, or you can buy a Turbo Timer that automatically allows the car to idle, then shuts it off. For $75 - $80, it can save you longer time between rebuilding of the turbo. Plus, it is a great conversation peice like Terry said.

That is the Main function of the turbo timer. Some turbo timers have other features not related to this function, such as mine that shows the speed of the vehicle, can count 0-60, 0-100, 50-100 and some other times. Its just an added feature that has nothing to do with the turbo timer part.

im not sure at the moment, the wire color is in the car audio/electronics section. i tapped into it behind the gauges though, not the ECU.
