Turbo Issues

Does any one have issues with their turbo....say in 6th gear and you try to floor it and it bogs down and smokes?

I took mine to the dealer today and am waiting to hear what the issue is.....

Probably just being in such a high gear at lower than ideal rpms it richens up a bit too much. That would be a dark almost black exhaust. It could also be the dreaded faulty turbo seals with bluish white smoke.

How fast are you going when you try to floor it in sixth? When I floor mine in sixth, it's at 80+ and I get no bogging and 110 or so pretty damn quick.

dont you love doing that? when someone does something stupid in the lane next to you, dip the gas and ur past the idiot.

I'm bumping this thread because this has happened to me twice now.

The first time was in sixth gear a few months ago on the highway just like the OP described.

The second time was tonight after I short-shifted to second gear and then went WOT.

There's a distinct flutter/spudder noise, accompanied by smoke out the exhaust (not sure of the color, as it was nighttime both times it happened).

The car also falls on it's face (feels like there's no boost). The problem resolves itself after lifting the throttle (re-application of the throttle after lifting briefly resulted in normal acceleration both times).

Is this some sort of wastegate issue maybe?

My car has 17K on it, and the only mods are CS transaxle mount inserts and a Cobb SRI.

I've never had this problem and I frequently access the torque in 6th gear at 2500~3000 RPMS. Once its at 3k it just surges forward without a problem. I've heard of cars without air straighteners (Short ram intake) having sputter and dieing problems because the MAF sensor gets all schitzo.

I have had something similar happen in fourth, kind of a lurching with the hammer down, like someone was toggling the power on and off while accelerating. But then that happens pretty rarely.

What RPM are you at when you floor it in 6th?

Well only one of the times that it happened was I in 6th gear, but I'd say that the engine speed was probably around 2500-3000 RPM both times it happened...

Like I said before, it's only happed twice, and neither time was I doing something that I hadn't done many times before without any problems at all.

(dunno)

Our engine, stock or mildly modded, likes keeping the revs at 3,000 or above to got WOT. You can cruise all day down at 2400 or even lower, but if you want to dip into the power, it takes the turbo a bit of time to spool up unless you first get your revs to 3K or better. Downshift once an pour it on.

This happens to me a lot. I heard if you put some of those ngk step colder plugs in it gets rid of it. It's nothing serious, just bogging from too much fuel.

I wouldn't floor it in sixth unless the RPM's are above 3500. It's just too much load on the engine in the lower RPM's. Your ECU is probably detecting knock and cutting boost or fuel.
