Tune up costs at 90K miles, brake fluid change

Just curious what others have paid for Mazda dealerships to perform tune-up. I'm at 94K miles on 2008 CX-9 and am about to take it in for some of the 90K services. Price I was quoted by dealership where we purchased the vehicle is $309 and include fuel injection service at the rail. I didn't think to ask, but I'm assuming that also includes new cables along with the spark plugs. I'll clarify with the service rep.

For brake fluid change, if that includes bleeding the brake lines, then the $60 I was quoted makes sense. But if that means just siphoning out the fluid and pouring in new, then I'll just do that myself.

Not sure how you made out, but the spark plug replacement itself will run you over $300 from the dealer.

what gives? will they throw in a free blinker fluid change?

I have put spark plugs in several vehicles... I don't remember even the most expensive plugs costing over 7 or 8 bucks each...

$300. to replace 6 plugs? What? $30. max for plugs leaves about 4 hours labor. They must be taking their sweet time, that or the plugs are made of unobtainium. $6. for the OEM is crazy. They are either renumbered NGK or Denso Platinums which can be had all day long for about $2. each.

I did the plugs on my V-8 Dakota which also has coil packs in 2 hours for about $20.00.

I was referring to the OE plugs, which costs from $4 to $6 on the web.

Please provide a link to the $2 platinum spark plug you referred to. I might stock up for later use...
cheers.

I did some checking with my tech buddy and he confirmed the OE Mazda plugs are renumbered Motorcraft SP411 platinum plugs. and you are correct, about $4.-$6. each. The non Platinum equivalent is the copper Motorcraft SP445 @ < $2.

I know some Honda dealers will sell you their "special Honda platinum tipped spark plugs" for $20 each.

I called up several dealerships in my area, and the $300 charge is right about standard. *MOST* dealerships justify the $300 charge for spark plug change by saying that the 3 plugs at the rear of the engine is harder to access and replace, plus they also have to replace some gaskets.

I stressed the word *MOST* because one particular dealership said it's actually possible to reuse the gaskets if the mechanic is careful, especially if the gaskets are still in good shape. They were able to replace the plugs on my CX-9 without replacing the gaskets and only charged me $95 (parts and labor). I doubt that the cost of the gaskets alone would make up for the $200 price difference. Perhaps when they factor in labor for gasket replacement? Not sure.

Why replace the gasket unless you actually can "smell" gasoline under the hood?
I don't think it is required to replace the gasket when replacing the spark plugs.
Granted, it is good to replace the gasket since it will need to be replaced at some point in time,
but it is not on a maintenance schedule.
$100-$200 to replace the gasket is not outrageous.

Looking at FSM, I don't see any gaskets other than the ones on the plugs themselves and they are included. If someone who has paid for the $300. plug change, please post up the gasket part #.

Also, since I was bored yesterday I pulled out one of the rear plugs. I removed the coil plug from harness, removed coil retainer bolt, removed coil and removed spark plug and checked gap. reinstalled in reverse order. 7 minutes start to finish.

7 minutes for one? That is 42 minutes for 6.
Dealer will gladly charge you at least one hour of labor for it if not more.
