transmission quick question

Will a regular protege tranny fit a speed protege. I heard they will but u have to do something with the speed sensor. Looked but couldn't find any information on here.

Yes, but you won't have the LSD that the msp came with unless you tear them apart and swap the diff

You won't have to worry about the speed sensor as you have abs. You will just have the speed sensor in the tran not hooked up to anything unless you put the dumby plug in it

My transmission looks like its gonna break very soon.... random gear grinding once every few months while driving in 2nd or 5th gear. not shifting. 4th gear are not stable too. Shakes Lil bit back and forth sometimes.

The synchros are probably worn out in your trans, only the MSP has a factory limited slip diff.

So if im gonna get a fix on it. Do i just buy synchro rings and replace them ?

If you are capable of pulling and tearing down the transmission then yes you can buy synchros and replace them and whatever else is damaged.

i wont be able to do it myself, my mechanic knowledge is very limited

how many hours of labour does shop charge for such job?

and should i pull them from used low km transmission or where can i get new ones for cheaper price ?

I wouldn't use used synchros, I used OEM but there are probably aftermarket options. I paid about $2500 to have a couple synchros, 3rd gear and the 3-4 shift fork replaced.

looked up on ebay, OEM synchronizers and forks are roughly 20-100 ea ?

but most of them are for 1.6L protege or something like protege before 2000 or mazda2 /MX3 etc...


do they fit msp? or where can i look up the correct parts# for msp?

If you're buying new synchros pay the money and get them from Mazda. Do it once or do it twice

so you are saying that "tasca OEM parts" on ebay ant selling OEM ? or not selling correct part# ?

You are best off taking it to a shop and letting them order the parts for you

Do i need to find a machineshop which does engine rebuild etc.? Or any mechanic shop could handle it? If that m factory gear GB worked out, i might get everything done at the same time.

You need a transmission shop and a tranny rebuild will be over $1000 easily with parts and labor even if they're just replacing a synchro or a shiftfork...

kind costy thing to change , but i need new/spare transmission for sure ... the old one feels like it would break anytime...

unless i buy another car, then it might be different story.

i might be able to get a $500 running condition NA protege. is it possible to rebuild it into MSP tranny with Mfactory LSD ? or its missing some other key component
