Transmission Problems

Just found this after searching for a while, luckily I think my problem is a lot simpler but I just wanted to get all the possibilities down,
-so anyways last weekend after me and my friend installed the PG IM, we went to go take a ride, (a while ago I had taken the break line off the caliper because I was going to take them off to paint them, but decided to just paint them while they were on the car), and last week I tried to bleed the breaks, but it got dark and on the last caliper I thought that I could see the fluid was still full in the reservoir, just couldn't see it well because it was now clear/clean and thought it was just a little air in the line, but anyways it ended up getting air in it.. so point is we drove it around, the breaks were ok, but caught about 1/2 way down (I know not really safe but they were OK, and I just drove around shortly and slowly to grab some food) and my dad (who was actually driving the car) said that he noticed that it was hard to shift into 1st gear mostly, and a little bit on the other gears... I wasn't sure what it was, but tomorrow I plan on bleeding the breaks again..

my question is once I bleed the breaks again so they are all good and set.. should this fix my problem with the shifting too, it was fine before I screwed up the break bleeding... oh also when I had put in the PG IM, I had used my old car's full break booster line and then added it before my vac distribution block, than used my old/cut BB line (w/check valve in it) connecting to the BB cylinder.. so it was double valved, I since then cut that extra valve out but didn't start the car because I was still in the middle of installing the AFC and a bunch of gauges/EBC..and stuff.. so any suggestions or predictions for this? I just need to get it figured out before sat's OCC meet, hopefully

I think your problem is with the gears in the tranny. When you try to shift they dont mesh correctly and sometimes will lock you out until you clutch it again. I read something a while back about people having trouble shifting and needing to have gears machined so they shift more smooth. This problems wasn't a syncro issue either. I don't know if the msp needs an additive for the LSD but i use GM syncromesh fluid in my other car and it works wonders.

Hmmmm I will have to check into the gear issue if the problem persist. It actually has gotten alittle bit better the last few days. And I forgot to mention I changed the tranny fluid about two weeks ago with Pennzoil syncromesh and an LSD additive. It didn't completely fix the problem however it has gotten alittle better since changing it.

Can anyone help me with my previous stated problem, sorry to thread jack but this is the closest thread I could find with similar symptoms, and I need to figure out if bleeding the breaks and/or clutch together or seperatly will/should fix it, I have heard that I should bleed the clutch also to get the air out since bleeding the breaks wont get the air out of the clutch line also.. but I am not sure where or what the clutch slave cylinder or whatever looks like, I know it is in the front on the tranny.. but don't know what I am looking for.. and how do you actually bleed it.. do you just press in the clutch like you would bleeding the breaks?.... help would be great thank you.

I am going to answer this real quick so I can have my thread back! If there is a possibilty of air in there then yes you should bleed the clutch. The slave cylinder is located on the front of your tranny. I had to take off my intake piping coming off of the turbo to get to it with a wrench. You loosen the the nipple with a small wrench don't remember what size I believe a 7mm and you have a friend push in the clutch and then you tighten it. Once it's tighten he releases the clutch. and repeat those steps until you have a nice steady stream of fluid with no air. Hope that makes since!

Anyways back to my problem, today it got worse. I can't get it in reverse at at all and if it does it will back up for a few feet and pop out of gear. This was after driving for about 30mins without stoping out in the country then I parked. When I went to leave about 15mins later reverse wouldn't work. I imagine it's all related with the 2nd and 4th but whatever it is, is affecting reverse worse. Any ideas????

I'm sorry dude I got no clue on how to fix your problem. If its a lot worse now take it back to the tranny place and see what they say.

Later,
Nick

Now that I think about it, one of my buddies had a similar problem with one of his vehicles. I'll try to get a hold of him and let you know what he says!

Awesome! Thanks man. Ya any in-put helps I don't want to get hosed by a shop and have them fix something and it turns out it's not the problem.

ok so did you fix the leaking part? sorry it took me so long to get back tou you, but what all have you done to try and fix thie issue?

Sorry no I have not fixed the brake master cylinder leak yet. It's not something that I was rushing to do cause I believe the leak has been there since I had the car. It's a very slow leak. When the gear problem first occured the fluid was only half full anyways so I figured if that was the problem it would've started way b4 it did. I am planning on fixing it eventually but it is not top on my list. I have changed the slave cylinder and the tranny fluid to Pennzoil syncromesh. The reverse came back today. It's weird how it just comes and goes after hard driving. I'm just stuck in a pickle here I am strapped for cash and don't want to keep spending money on other things and it turns out that it didn't correct the problem. Note that it is still locking me out of 2nd and 4th still but not as often as it used to.

can you hear a knocking when you push on the clutch when the car is not on? could be your throw out bearing.

I don't believe so I will check that out next time I get in it. Will it just be one knock or several.

I don't know if you got this fixed or not but, I'm willing to guess it's the syncros. I can't recall if 1,3,5 & 2,4,R are on the same shaft but there is some obvious relation there. Those are all gears on the bottom side of the shift pattern. If you''re in a gear and it actually pops out, this usually indicates a badly worn syncro.
