transmission oil

you really need a write up on a transmission flush?? theres a drain plug and a filler, what more is there to write up?? remove the filler, remover the drain, a thick (most likely black at the time) liquid will poor out. insert drain plug and fill thru the filler until it start pouring out of the top. then drive the car for 5 minutes and repeat until your satisfied. if you really need pics on 2 large ass plugs to drain your fluid....there's a problem.
Hey listen here bro....maybe some people aren't as mechanically inclined as others, and if they would like some pics to reassure them where the plugs are and a writeup to guide them through it so be it. I have had 11 years experience under the hoods of cars and you don't see me judging anyone. So why don't you take your attitude somewhere else. Oh and i will have the writeup and pics later on this afternoon. I am at work at the moment and wil get it done after.

well sitting here i figured i would do the writeup now to at least get that done, and i will post the pics later.

Now people are mentioning flushing the trans i dont find that completely neccesary unless your trans fluid is real dirty. But i will put the flushing instructions as well.

Tools needed- Jack, 23mm or 15/16 socket, and suction gun

Step 1. Jack your car up from the drivers side.

step 2. Look under the trans and on the front of it closest to the bumper you will see a plug. This is the fill plug. It is a 23mm if you don't have a 23mm a 15/16 socket will also work.

step 3. Remove the fill plug ( the reason you remove the fill plug first is because the last thing you want to do is drain your trans and not be able to get the fill plug out).

Step 4. Look directly at the bottom of the trans you will see another 23mm plug. This is the drain plug. Remove that and let the fluid drain out.

Step 5. To flush the trans the easiest thing to do it just use regular 75 90w gear oil because you dont want to waste good fluid such as the royal purple or synchromesh. Get your suction gun (pic of that a little later) and fill it with the gear oil. Then just inject it into your trans let it drain. Repeat this process until the gear oil that comes out is clean. This only needs to be done if your fluid is real dirty. Or if you just want to do it feel free.

Step 6. Put your drain plug back in and tighten.

Step 7. Get the gear oil that you are using and use the suction gun to fill your trans. Just suck the oil into the gun and inject it into the trans.(IF YOU ARE USING A LSD ADDITIVE ONCE YOU SUCK DOWN HALF OF A BOTTLE OF GEAR OIL MIX THE LSD ADDITIVE WITH THE OTHER HALF). You will lose some oil because the gun cant suck the bottle dry so i reccomend getting 4 quarts of gear oil. Continue filling the trans until the oil continuosly flows out of the fill plug hole.

Step 8. Put your fill plug back in and tighten.

Now you are finished drop the jack and take it for a drive!!!

Ok I'm going to finally chime in on this....

Facts:
Syncromesh was designed for use in cars with brass syncros, as it is extremely low corrosive as opposed to standard gear oil which would eat holes in the brass over a period of a few years.

It is the exact same thing as gm and oddly enough about the same price

It works fine in every transmission regardless if you have brass syncros or not. Whether it benefits you is debatable as the only other advantage is the "cushion" design it has which most modern synthetics now also incorporate.

Who am I to chime in:
* ASE Certified
* Minor in chemical ecology(I actually know how this stuff works)
* Driven and built race cars for going on 8yrs now
* I've used it for 8yrs now and have torn down more transmission then I can count...trust me I would of seen the problems if there were any...

Disclaimer:
I've used this in jeeps, mazdas, mitsubishis, chevys(namely the corvette)...but I have no clue what it would do in your snapper lawn mower....

So basically based on dsmconverts post as i said before synchromesh is fine for our transmissions. Thanx dsm.....

I run Syncromesh in my tranny and have no problems with so does my friend who has a msp and we have had it in for over 3k miles and no problems. It is alot smoother than before and no grind or problem with getting it in to gear at all. I recommend the pennzoil syncromesh to anyone because it not to expensive but works great for a transmission oil. But I would still like to hear the reason from the guy from pennzoil about why its not good for our trannys.

just a side note, redline mt-90 has a lsd additive in it already. i just changed my fluid 2 nites ago n i read it on the bottle. when shifting at full boost id grind from time to time especially 1st to 2nd. its gone now. but a friend o mine has a turbo es n he uses 2 quarts syncromesh n 1 quart lucas n that fixed all his tranny problems. so im sure either way you go you cant lose.

Well you dont have to be a ****** dick about this whole situation. I'd rather not start a flame war over a thread about tranny oil but if you want to take it there, by all means have at it. I know a lot of guys on here like to just rag on the guys who arent sure on things or ask "dumb" questions, Hell the thought of ragging on the dumb question guy has crossed my mind as well. But keep it to yourself and you wont start online bulls*** flame wars, this is a community for car talk, and where people need help. Buzz off ****** noob.

Thanks to Speedcicle for that write up and the pics coming later. It'll be a real help

werd i shoulda snapped a few pics when i had it up on the lift. theres like a million damn bolts under the tranny you dont wanna take out the wrong one. that could potentially really suck.

Exactly why I like to check out the How to before I start anything major on my car. LIKE THIS. I was under there the other night changing my engine oil and I took a look at the trans for a couple mins. And I really had no clue where the drain and fill plug is, and i'm not about to get under there and start messin with bolts.

like i said i will have pics up asap but i do believe that the drain and fill are the only two 23mm bolts in there. They are pretty big. So i will get some pics up.

Not a prob man, your pics and write up are greatly appreciated.

using MT90 for the past year. no problems whatsoever. I have 3 bottles of Royal Purple MaxGear synthetic oil in my garage though. Anybody running that?

just to clarify I'm not saying other synthetics are bad or anything...I've used pretty much every synthetic out there with positive results...its the "fresh" clean part that is important...I tend to dump mine about every 20K, just b/c you'll only get about 70% of it out during a normal change...well unless you pump it out...I also highly highly suggest magnetic plugs and/or fishing around inside with a telescope magnet to grab any shavings that develope from wear...optimally you will find very little...but it only takes a particle a few microns wide to eat up a seal/bearing...

Where do you get magnetic plugs?

i'm very inclined mechanically..but doing something my first time, i would like some guidance. so i dont' **** anything up. thanks. i've done plenty of motor/tranny s***.so just keep your thoughts elsewhere.

ive been using penzoil snycromesh and lucas oil stabilizer in my trans for about 2.5 years, and have only good things to say. i used to grind 3rd regardless of engine speed or load. now, no problem whatsoever!! i also have tried many fluids, and by far this has worked the best!!!
craig

hmmm lookin back at my post i guess i was a bit of a dick. sorry to anyone that was offended.

and for magnetic drain plugs. autozone has them. you just need to get the size of the one they sell (should say on the package or box they get it from) and then just get a magnetic plug with the same size threads, i forgot what size it is sorry. but i know for sure they have one, i did exactly that and have been using one for about 2.5k and no problems. looks longer but like i said no probs. and if the employee at autozone says they can't help you tell them to **** off and get a manager or something, i hate parts stores employees, even tho i am one. everyone else i work with is lazy. so just goin by that little fact haha.

here is the pic of the fill plug notice it just up and to the right of the sensor.

This is a pic of the drain plug it is dead center in the lowest point of the trans.

I will have a pic of the suction gun in a few more min.....
