transmission -BROKEN!!!!-

well this is just great..
today on the highway i did a really easy 4-5upshift at like 4000rpm
a little bit later i decided i wanted to go a little faster so i downshifted back to 4th..
however..the revs didnt change
so i was like wtf..
i tried 4-5-4...nothing..
down to 3rd..same revs..
put it in neutral..same revs..

my transmission got stuck in 5th gear... damn..
i mean..it wasnt a problem on the highway..
but i got into locals for about 2min before i get home..and i had to start at like 3 lights in 5th -_-
well anyways..i called mazda roadside assitance and they should be here soon...
my car has 18,000 miles..
but the transmission is only 11,000miles old..
the almost same thing happened when i had 7000 miles
on a 2-3upshift..it got caught in 3rd gear..

what the heck is going on? like all the times ive driven really hard or raced, ive never grinded and the tranny hasnt broke...but like on an easy upshift the tranny breaks..with no notice..no grinding or anything..
i guess i should just drive hard all the time

anyways...i could use some supoprt..lol..im freaking dying here man...oh well..new free tranny(warranty hallelujah) before turbo comes in isnt too bad of a deal i guess

I talked to one of the master tech at a dealer here and he said that there is a service memo about the transmitions. He said that the biggest problem is with the "2 to 3" shift. The said that is where 90% of the damaged transmitions are breaking at. He sid it is mostly when people try to speed shift and slam it into gear. But a new transmition still shouldnt break just from shifting. Especially with the low power that these cars have. He said he has fixed about 10 to 15 proteges that have blown trannys and like 11 of them were at the 2 to 3 shift.

I've started to notice a grinding sound when I do a quick shift from 2nd to 3rd as well. I'm thinking I'm gonna wait and point it out at the next scheduled checkup in about 1000 KMs.

I've actually had another odd problem as well...sometimes when I try to shift into reverse...I can't. It's weird it's like I am just not able to put the shifter into place. I've found tho if I just put it into drive first, let out the clutch a bit, then I can shift to reverse. So I'm thinking I've definitely got a couple problems to be looked at. Darn.

that i ignored..like mine would grind/chirp sometimes in the 2-3
and i had problems with reverse sometimes as well...liek it would just be stuck..and not go in...



by far, tranny is the weakest part of the car i guess then..

That's actually normal for a standard tranny. Every one I have owned has been like that.

Hmmm not saying that it's bs...but why is that a normal thing for it to do? I mean when I first got the car it never did that...only for the last few months on occassion(it doesn't even happen every single time). I'm curious then as to what causes this.

As far as bringing it in, I'm nearly at the checkup point and would rather they take care of it all at the same time if possible so I don't have to go without my car forever.

It's "normal" because there is no synchronizer for reverse, and if the gears aren't at least a little offset, it just won't go in.

Usually, on about 7 or 8 out of 10 tries, it will go into reverse on the first try. When it doesn't, go back to neutral, let the clutch out a tad very briefly, and this spins the gears and likely on the next shot, it will go in.

I've had it take 2 or 3 tries once in a very "blue moon" but it's nothing wrong with the transmission.

Exactly, the teeth dont line up once in a while and they catch on each other, the same thing that happens when you grind gears. This is why when you come to a stop kinda quick then have to go in reverse, it will grind unless you sit there for a few seconds and let the gears in the tranny stop moving in the forward direction.

Just checked the recall database, and this is all I was able to pull up for proteges.... I hope they recall our cars if this is a major problem. Trannys can be expensive

BigBlue....the NOT going straight into Reverse ALL the time is also mentioned in the manual....at least it is in my 2002 manual...it tells you that if it won't go in...you should take the car into neutral and then try again..and it SHOULD go.

I always shift into first or second before putting it in reverse and never have any problems. Maybe some of you should try this. Just a thought. Good luck all!

I do same as o.g. - I go into first before shifting to reverse. Every blue moon I will need to do it more than once to engage reverse.

Don't your gears always move in the forward direction? Only reverse moves in reverse...

tranny probs

Just wanted to let you know your not the only one. My problem is different then your, but a problem nontheless.

I have no problem shifting, just a high pitched whine, that gets louder with speed, when I go over 20mph. The dealer is pulling the tranny as I type!

I still can't believe that the tranny is shot and I only have 14,000 miles on it. I don't even beat on the car. Its all show and no go so I don't even bother racing!!!
