tranny question

i was wondering since the 8's 6speed only hold about 300 whp , if i should get the tranny built or (if it can even be done), put a 3rd gen rx7 tt tranny in my car? im not sure of the mounting locations even though they are both 13b rotarys thanks for your time and help

the rx7 5speed will bolt up to the motor, but if it will fit in the trany tunnel im not sure...I think it might, but you would need to modify the PPF (power plant frame) as well as get a new driveshaft.....Then you would have a good trany but would blow up your rear end all the time.....so you would also need to replace that.

I know with the 6speed you can get new shift forks and a few other internal parts (bearings, some gear sets, syncros...ect) and it will hold up to more power.....

I have seen the rx8 6speed bolted to a 20b and it was making 600whp...but I have no idea how long it lasted.

Yea, rgonza from purto rico beefed up an rx8 6 speed tranny for his 20b. Last I heard, it was still going strong. Read the thread about the 3 rotor from puerto rico on rx8club. You can find it under the major horsepower upgrades section. He mentions what parts of the tranny he needed to upgrade to withstand this power level.

I understand that the 8 and the Miata share transmissions, and agree that they aren't near as strong as the FD's. But even if they will bolt in, the gearing is going to be different than the 8's six-speed. Which means you'll probably have to put in an FD diff too. And I'm not sure how easy that would be either.

i did read the 20b post on rx8club but i dont know of anybody around ohio that is able to fab these components. and i would still have to fab the diff wouldnt i

Don't know what your 8 is currently dynoed at, but personally I think you'll probably be alright for a long time with the stock transmission........... unless your running 265s on the back and dropping the clutch at 4k. ;)
I would think that tranny failure would be linked more to torque than HP. Even then, the diff might go first.
Just my .02. ;)
