Looking to trade my suv. In the past I have used kelly's and edmunds and pretty much got clobbered at the dealer even with Japanese cars. They brake out some book and I have no idea what it's actually worth. They all tell me what's on the internet is not accurate. Anybody use more accurate resources or other techniques for a trade in.. Thanks

I used KBB to determine a trade in value on our CR-V, and stuck to it. The dealer finally gave in because they knew my number was valid.

The dealers are always going to try to make you feel guilty for wanting to get money out of your trade. Even if they have to lie.

Negotiate the price of the vehicle you want to buy first separate from the trade-in. Otherwise, you'll usually get screwed. If they give you a good or fair value on your trade-in, that means they usually make it up on a higher purchase price.

kbb is junk as is any price book that is really consumer driven.

You need to use what the dealers use if you want to know what the dealer is going to say your vehicle is worth. Does not mean you have to stick to it but most dealers won't go higher then that.

This was one main reason I didn not want to buy the Mazda. They drop much more in value than a Honda.

Just because dealers never want to pay what KBB says your car is worth doesn't make it junk. It just makes owners gullible when the dealer convinces them they are asking too much.

Buying a car with resale as a forethought is not the right thing to do. If you think a dealer will give you a good trade (what you actually expect) on a Honda, you are wrong. If you need to think about resale, think abut retail not trading in. You can easily get 10-20 percent more for your vehicle then any dealer is willing to give you.

Don't forget, in a severe recession like this, don't care if it's a honda or lexus, you are gonna get hit hard on any trade in. If the dealers can't move the new cars off the lot with huge incentives, how are they gonna move the used cars when new is not that much more?
