I can't find any info on the TPMS on a 2016 ,is it passive (via abs) or active (sensor on RIM) .I am thinking bout buying a 2016 GT and although not a deal breaker it may limit my choice of aftermarket rims. :-(

The terms are indirect and direct, not passive and active.

Regardless of what you call it, though, you don't have sensors in your wheels.

The service advisor at the dealer told me that the TPMS works by measuring the wheel speed in relation to the others or to what it should be. An underinflated tire will spin slightly slower then one properly inflated. There are no sensors in the wheels, is what I was told.

Yes, it's passive (sensorless) - the way all vehicles should be! There is a dash button that let's you re-sync when you change tires over, although if they are the same diameter you may not need to use it.
