TPMS acting up for no apparent reason...

My TPMS light has come on three times in the last couple of weeks for no apparent reason. First time was a week or two after working on the rear suspension at which time I disconnected the plugs on those corners and reconnected them without difficulty after completing the work. Yesterday I replaced the tires without resetting the system and the light came on after a mile or two of driving. I figured the dimensional difference from worn to new rubber might have been enough to trigger it, so I rechecked the pressures and reset the system. This morning the light came on again after a couple miles of driving. It appears that something in the TPMS is amiss as there is nothing tire-wise that would cause this. Anyone have anything like this happen and, if so, do you know what caused it. Car is out of warranty, so I'm trying to avoid a trip to the dealer.

I set my tire pressures cold in the morning before driving and reset the TPM at that time. Never an issue with mine.

The DIY workaround is what PARIS posted...
Don't understand. You mean what PIOTREKI91 posted? I read it guickly and it appeared that the verification procedure involved a hookup to a dealer computer or a scan tool.

The way I read it was how to properly reset the TMS system when any tire change or adjust is performed. Ed

Could be a bad/dirty ABS sensor at the wheel or sensor wire ready to come off.

I re-read those threads related to TPMS malfunctioning:

and this one closely fits your situation:
Hi
I had same issues for like 2 years on and off. At the end, took the car again when air pressure were correct at all 4 wheels, but alarm came on. Dealer reset it on the computer again but the TMPS lights came out. Finally they replaced a module (Not sure which parts) and no longer TMPS lights comes on even with correct tire pressure.

Unfortunately most people never did report back how did they resolve TPMS issue eventually. But I'd second to madar's idea above as I've seen people claimed they had damaged ABS wheel speed sensor which caused TPMS malfunctioning although that should trigger ABS and traction control lights in theory. Of course it's possible the ABS sensors or the wirings might get damaged during your recent tire replacement. I believe the verification procedure involving a hookup to a dealer computer or a scan tool won't help you like CX5BC's post indicated. I know it'd be a hassle, the worst case is you can get a CX-5 ABS wheel speed sensor for about $30+ and try it out one wheel at a time. Here is TPMS wiring diagram from Kedis82ZE8 which may or may not help you:

Looks like TPMS makes use of barometric pressure and temperature sensors. Also some history data it can keep.

The apparent reason is that you did not reset the TPMS after your new tires. So it will most likely take at least another reset maybe 2 before it can clear out the bad data it collected after your tire replacement before you reset.

The tpms has 3 "buckets" of stored data it compares the current sample value against.

Right now, bucket #3 has your old tires values in it, bucket #2 has your new tire values in it, and bucket #1 has your values AFTER you reset the TPMS.

So when the TPMS tries to compare the data from current sample to the last 3 buckets, nothing is matching.
