Touch Screen

Just curious how many of you use the touch screen on the CX-5 vs. the command knob? I used to just use the command knob (to avoid the finger prints), but am liking the touch screen more so.

Anyway, just curious which one you use.

Even when I have the car stopped, I still use the command knob. I didn't really like it at first, but now that I'm familiar with it, just seems easier. Plus it keeps my fingerprints off the screen. Lol

The only time I used the touch screen was when I was loading a batch of addresses in the NAV system. Other than that, 100% command knob, even when entering a one-off address.

I've had the car one year now.

I occasionally do. Love the knob though and will never own a car without one now. So I think that limits me to Mercedes, Mazda, and Audi. Not bad company. :D

I only use the control knob. The home button is raised to find it easy and I can use the buttons and the control knob without ever taking my eyes off the road.

I almost never use the touch screen. I don't want it to end up looking like my phone's screen.
There is one instance though where the touch screen is helpful. In the NAV mode there are times that I would like to look to the north, south, east or west from where it shows my current position to be. As far as I can tell that can only be done while the car is not moving and by dragging the image with one's fingertip. That seems lame, I would like to do it while moving. I haven't figured out any way to do it with the command knob and changing the magnification does away with all the smaller side streets which defeats my intent.

@Dwight: Here's a link to the 2019 CX-5 manuals page, just in case you've not got it already. There's a downloadable manual there dedicated to the NAV system.

From what I've read, it SEEMS that the only Map View that can be changed without the touch screen is magnification (you can use Voice Commands to Zoom In and Zoom Out), although the manual is not clear on which NAV buttons can/cannot be selected with the Command Knob. Perhaps the Zooms can be.

Manipulating the View is in Section 2.

Not to be trite, but I installed a https://www.amazon.com (commissions earned) on my infotainment screen.

Lays right on the screen. A perfect fit.

Thanks AvoidinDeer. I do have the manual downloaded to my desktop and the screen saver is a good idea for anyone who uses the touch screen function.
What I have found is when in the NAV mode, if you click on the Hide Buttons icon you can use the command knob to then change the magnification on the screen. This is good if you want a bird's eye view from a higher elevation to look at major roads and highways.
But the problem is if you are at low magnification (which has the most detail) and you want to look for example, at parallel side streets for an alternate route. The only way to actually look around the edges of the screen that is being displayed, is to use the touch screen to drag the image up/down or left/right and that can only be done if the vehicle isn't moving. As far as I have been able to determine anyway.
It would be nice if the command knob had "steps" in the display to move the center of the image a certain distance from the little arrow that represents your vehicle's current position on the road without zooming out and losing the smaller street detail.

Interesting.

I didn't know the Command Knob could be used to magnify...that's not in the manual. I guess you tried "bumping" the Knob left and right to see if that shifted the view.

I should sit in my driveway and play with it. I use the NAV so rarely, and when I do, I just go where I'm told ;)

But again, that's country living. There ain't but so many ways to get there from here.

This is correct. Twisting the dial changes zoom. Moving it like a joystick scrolls around the map.

I agree with this on my '16 with the caveat that zoom works all the time, but panning right/left/up/down with the "joystick" only works when not moving.
