Tires and Gas Mileage?

Does the brand and type of tire make a difference to gas mileage? If so has anyone noticed a great difference in this after changing the original tires?

Any specific tire pressure to obtain the best mileage.

Yes tires can make a 5% difference according to CR. Michelin and some other manufactures make "low rolling resistance" tires. I set my CX 7 tire pressure overnight cold before driving with a good digital pressure guage. I run 34 psig in my CX 7 tires instead of 32 that is listed on the drivers door. I doubt that a 2 psig increase in a radial will make more than 0.5 mpg difference. Going over an additional 10% over manufactures recomendation and you start having safety trade off issues. Ed

Just a note, but many times manufacturer's recommended pressures are not just for safety, but ride quality. If you do increase pressures, make sure you keep the ratios the same. I run mine at 40 PSI.

I believe he is talking about the front to rear tire pressure. i.e. same front & rear pressure.

let me correct you all, almost all oem tires have low rolling resistance, the vehicle manufacturers mandate that tires have low rolling resistance so they can claim their vehicles get the best possible mileage

Michelin is not the only tire company that can make low rolling resistance

In fact low rolling resistance usually results in tires that wear faster

Overinflating tires will result in rapid center wear as well, the center of your tire is wear the contact with the road is so if you live in a wet climate I would advise not to do this
