Tips for boosted MSP owners

I was under the impression that when you hit cut other than the unpleasantness it really does nothing to hurt the car itself...Anyone else care to chime in? :)

If the cut is not complete or it is intermittent, you could run into a situation where every time it comes on and off you detonate a little. You would not notice because you would be so concerned with the hopping.

Could one get a thicker head gasket instead of new rods and pistons?

Yes but, The cylinder wall is a lot different than the gasket material. The gasket could over time become the weakest point of your engine and fail. I know what you are talking about and yes it has been done with success. IMO it is a quick solution to a problem that deserves a better solution.

:p

I should get a thicker gasket while collecting money for some forged internals.

I have heard of doubling the gasket. I would not recommend it. If you do it buy two completely new ones. Do not reuse the old one as it has been clamped down between the head and block once.

Just so you are aware of the amount of work you are about to do just for a gasket...

Manifold...Off
Timing Belt...Off
Head...Off
Install Gaskets
Tourque Head Bolts
Time the cams
Valve Cover
Manifold

Keep to stock boost for now, save the money required and do it all at once. IMO. Sorry man. It was a good idea, just a little bit impractical for the amount of gains.

Is it really so hard to drive our MSP's just as they are? I'm at 3k miles and still having a blast every time I get behind the wheel.

It's a human trait. To improve upon something. You are right, the car is great, and its easy to up the boost on a turbo. People are finding out the upper limits of what the engine can handle that's all. Like I said above, only about 10 drivers have had a catastrophic failure, the engine seems strong.

never turn the boost up in your car, 8psi can kill your motor.
(lol2) EVERYONE SHOULD JUST RUN STOCK BOOST 4-EVER and plz lets drop this never-ending topic.
this is off topic but....i troll over in the srt-4 boards and those guys are talking about 260 hp and 300 tq yet we're all like our car is bad, sucks in the 1/4 mile, sucks for hp....but no one is willing to push the engine, with the right mods of course. or even build the engine up(unless they have too)....i have yet to see a dyno from a msp with anything close to what joep did....if anybody wants to send me 45 bucks ill go make 2 dyno pulls tommorrow.(i say this cause im just BROKE, well not really just have no money to spend on it)

yeah the msp is not made for the track, anyone who uses it for that reason is a moron and should be burned at the stake!!!

Whoah guys, hold the phone. Where all the hostility from ? You seem to realize that alot of the questions being asked, are from new members, who are new to FI. I personally do not want to see them lose a motor, because they get half assed info, or see what someone else, who has knowledge, tuning ability, and try to emulate it, and lose the engine.

Also, In light of the ammount of motors that have popped recently, I think it IS in peoples interest to build for more boost, before you boost more. Im glad you guys can boost over 12 PSI every day, and not crap your motor.

I do have a favor to ask tohugh, lets see your setups, and or your Boost gauges in action via a video. That way, you will prove your right, and we all can boost 15 PSI, nd not have to worry about it. :D

noted!

Im seriously not trying tobe a jerk bro. :D Please dont take it that way. I would just like to have as much info available to people who ask these questions as possible. IF they see your setups, and see what it takes to make power like that, and run that high of boost levels, maybe they will realize what they need to do. :D

I thinked what disctreet speed fails to mention is that, as he said in another post, that he does not drive the car hard under load. That shows he knows what he is talking about. Plus he has some mods done, fmic and exhaust i'm assuming.

People get the idea of seeing 12 psi daily, that they can just crank up the boost that high and go at it. They are wrong. The fmic and exhaust obvisiously aid in protecting DS's engine. Not to mention he prolly runs at least 93 octane.

I started this post to inform the NEW or not so informed people, so we stop seeing popped motors! :)

I give props to DS for his car, I'll give more when I see a vid! I have no reason to doubt or give him 100% credit.

But I want new members and others to be aware that this car is not as strong as others(DSM,SRT4,WRX) in terms of internals, and lets not the most important thing, fuel maps!

That is the real weakness of the car, in the fuel maps, it is the terrbile maps that will lead to detination and engine failure.

I also agree with DS that not enoguh people are pushing the limits of the MSP, it seems all we got a younger people who only car about looks. Which is fine I guess. But I want people to push the limits safely naturally.

I think in a few more months the MSP community will grow, it just takes time :).
