Timing Belts - The Root of ALL Evil!

Wierd, I did 209K on my original belt.

Whenever I have broken a belt I test the motor for damage. Pretty simple tests, just need a compression test kit. Or I just toss a belt on it and see if it runs.

Live and learn. Least you have a spare motor to play with!

Didn't go as far as slappin' a new belt on but did do a compression test - I had a big fat zero in two cylinders (don't remember which two) and next to nothin' in the other two...... ah well, ya live and learn huh? But like Mike said, at least I have a spare that can be rebuilt - woohoo I get to learn EVEN more about my motor when we get to that point;)

Running a compression check with the timing belt off isn't s valid check because the valves aren't moving, some are always open, consequently no compression.

Years ago my son broke a timing belt on his Isuzu Stylus XS. At that time I assumed all engines were inteference. To determine if valves were damaged I moved both cams so the valves were closed in the cylinder I was checking. I used a comprression tester adapter with the Schrader valve removed and applied air pressure to each cylinder and listened for escaping air. All cylinders passed the test and the car ran ok atfter replacing the belt. Several years later I looked at the Gates belt chart and it indicated the Isuzu Stylus was a non-intereference engine.

hey guys! i have a question regarding my timing belt.. i just rebuilt the head and put it back on,know iam trying to install the timing belt. i lined up the camshafts timing and as well as the crankshaft. replaced the tensioner, but for some reason everytime i try to slip on the beltt the stupid crankshaft moves on me.do i need to do something with the tensioner and the spring or what? i tryed to get that sucker in but everytime i do the crankshaft still turns on me...iam gettin frustrated cause iam still up workin on it... oh by the way i have a 2003 mazdaspeed protege.2.0 turbo.. any advise will be greatly appreciated...thx in advance

No offense taken slavrenz - you're right, I didn't actually open her up..... I just assumed that it was destroyed based on the fact that the dealer (it was a FORD dealer who also sells Mazdas by the way and definately NOT my usual dealer) told me that it had an interference head. It pisses me off that I might have been able to get away with just replacing the timing belt...... however with almost 180,000 miles on my original engine and the fact that I was starting to burn a little oil it was probably only a matter of time anyway I guess. We're keeping the old motor and plan on rebuilding it when this one dies. Thanks again for all of your posts - I can't believe how much I've learned and continue to learn from all of you!

Well, they probably were going by some incorrect reference that they got from somewhere like the Gates Belt Company that they would normally regard as reputable. My guess is that they saw the broken belt and just assumed that the engine was wrecked.

Just misalign one of the camshafts by one tooth to compensate for the crankshaft turning. When you finally have it on, you'll see that it all lines up correctly... play with it.

Thank you for the info. i actually got it done this morning. Finally its done. know to put the radiator and all the other crap in....
just had another question.....does anyone know the torque in which we have to tighten the camshaft shims... i dont have a torque wrench, well not yet, but can i just tighten them by hand?

Debbi seems somewhat well informed on her own.
