No offense taken slavrenz - you're right, I didn't actually open her up..... I just assumed that it was destroyed based on the fact that the dealer (it was a FORD dealer who also sells Mazdas by the way and definately NOT my usual dealer) told me that it had an interference head. It pisses me off that I might have been able to get away with just replacing the timing belt...... however with almost 180,000 miles on my original engine and the fact that I was starting to burn a little oil it was probably only a matter of time anyway I guess. We're keeping the old motor and plan on rebuilding it when this one dies. Thanks again for all of your posts - I can't believe how much I've learned and continue to learn from all of you!
hey guys! i have a question regarding my timing belt.. i just rebuilt the head and put it back on,know iam trying to install the timing belt. i lined up the camshafts timing and as well as the crankshaft. replaced the tensioner, but for some reason everytime i try to slip on the beltt the stupid crankshaft moves on me.do i need to do something with the tensioner and the spring or what? i tryed to get that sucker in but everytime i do the crankshaft still turns on me...iam gettin frustrated cause iam still up workin on it...hope i can figure this out oh by the way i have a 2003 mazdaspeed protege.2.0 turbo.. any advise will be greatly appreciated...thx in advance
Just misalign one of the camshafts by one tooth to compensate for the crankshaft turning. When you finally have it on, you'll see that it all lines up correctly... play with it.
Its not the mileage that kills the timing belt... its the heat cycles...It gets soft with age just like your rad hoses just food for thought.
Nope, its 60k for t-belt
