timing belt and water pump questions....

My buddy has a 96 protege with the 1.8 dohc motor in it and the water pump has a little leak to it, plus its at 108k on the original timing belt. So he asked me if id do the work for him. Ive done several on my eclipse, however never on these cars. Im just wondering if there are any special tools or tricks to gettin these done in a timely fashion. Thanks, JP

for one you will want to jack up the passenger side high. There is not much space on that side for you to work. Use a air gun to pull the pully, unless you have the special tool that is needed to hold the crank.

-- When you are putting everything back up, you will want to align the I on the intake came with the I on the cover and the E on the exhaust came with the E on the cover. If you need any pdf's pics, just email me. Don't forget to set the crank in the right postion. You have to put the pulley on and turn it till the notch is alighned with the T.

-- Seal the water pump lightly with some gasket maker. It really helps.Tell him to change the timing belt also.

-- Make sure your ready to work in a really tight spot.
You don't need any special tools, just some small ones or small air ratchet. 10mm and a 14mm will be most of what you will need.
