Ticking noise help!

Hi, my car is doing a weird ticking noise. I would like to know whats is causing that before taking it to garage.

Protege5 2003 - 114,000 km

I did some research and It seems to lead me to the valves or the timing belt.

The ticking happen when giving gas between 2000rpm and 3500rpm (maybe more).
If I floor the pedal it does not tick but when I'm just cruising and pressing slightly on the pedal the engine will do this ticking

Here's a video showing the ticking noise in neutral

ps: the engine is cold in this video so the idle is high. its normal, there is no idling problem on the car.

Thanks for any help/advises.

It sounds like some kind of exhaust rattle to me,... maybe heat shield.

Try to get someone else to rev the engine while you check it from underneath.

Grab ahold of your tailpipe (when it's off and cold) and wiggle it around to see if it yields the clunk/rattle.

It sounds kinda deep and rumbly so I'd think a bigger heavier piece of metal rattling,... exhaust related noises are common on our cars.
Check all your exhaust hangers and connection points on the exhaust system.

Thanks for answering. However the sound is coming from the engine itself. I've checked with a friend already if it was the heat shield and its not. It's not a metal rattling noise it comes from the engine itself.

I just hope its not a 1000$ job or I think I'll scrap that car

Well,... I don't know much about rod knock and those sorts of engine type noises, but it still sounds to me like something is loose and rattling ??

Maybe somebody with rod knock/spun bearing experience will chime in.

If it is an exhaust rattle that's the same RPM range that makes mine rattle, might be a common thing-
it's tough to tell from a video though, it sounds like something rattling and knocking, and it seems a lot louder than my rattly (is that even a word?) exhaust. Has it been a while since the car's oil was changed or has it recently been overheated? If the timing belt hasn't been changed before that's something to think about doing around 100,000 miles (which is... i don't know how many kilometers. We'll say... 150,600KM) but i don't think an old belt would cause a rattling/knocking noise.

pro tip: have a friend or yourself listen to the engine while it's making that sound through a pipe, sort of like a stethoscope, to get a better idea of where the sound is coming from

Here's what they say about T-Belt Maintenance Schedules:

Thanks for your answers guys. I will take the car to the garage after vacations cause I'm out of cash now. I won't be driving the car much except for grocery and things like that, hope the engine will last till I repair loll..
