Ticking/chattering noise from motor?

Hey Driver X, I just pulled my motor. Im having my technician friend take it apart and rebuild it, but I'll keep you posted on what he finds is wrong with it since your motor is making the same noise as mine.

well i at least narrowed it to the side with belt. could it be the water pump? what else is inside the casing of where the timing chain is at? we do have a chain right ?

well... you could have narrowed it own to 2 cylinders, or the side of the cams that are makeing it... not saying thats the problem but if the water pump is out you would know it... your motor would over heat... I still think its inside the motor the way that sounds...

Not totally true... my water pump took a s*** and i didnt have any over heating problems..

Granted this is when it was 0 outside. Mine sounded horrible, i thought my engine was going to blow!!!

that is true... your right... but its warm outside now lol so I guess we were both right... but idk what the problem really is Id have to be under the hood to give him a better idea...

and I didnt know my water pump was broke untill the first warm day last year... it didnt sound like that though... mine idnt make any type of noise.

Is there anything else that I can do right now untill I can get the time to take it to the shop??? My schedule right now is so screwed up.... Again thanks to all that have listened to the clip. I will let you guys know what I do find if anything once I get it to a Tech.

well... you could pull your spark plugs out an check to see if there all screwed up from the piston, but thats not to common, and you could get one of those extend-o-magnets an stick it down in the cylinder and see if oyu pull any shaveing out... but the chances of this are slim to none...

Update: The noise is coming from behind the Timing belt Cover. If I move the cover via a screw driver Flexing the cover, the noise changes....

Q: How hard is it to remove the Timing cover?

Q: Can it be removed without the Valve cover being taken off?

Q: Can I take off the two belts...controlling the Alternator and Power Steering and start the car and see the noise is present. (could be a tenision issue)

I thinking that one of these items in the pic might be going bad. just want to inspect them thats all.

yeah you can take the 2 belts off if your talking about your alternator and waterpump belt... for the other questions... IDK I havent torn down the motor that far, but Idk why you would have to take the Valve Cover off to take the Timing Belt Cover off...

I dont know why you would have to take the valve cover off either. Just wasnt sure, I was hoping someone could tell me what I need to take off to save time but I guess I will do it the old fashion way and just trail and error.... thanks for the quick response...

wll your going to have to take your alternator belt and your accesory belt off, I am pretty sure... but I dont think you should have to take any thing else off... I'm pretty sure the alternator and stuff are out of the way enough... but I would suggest lifting the front end of the car when you try taking the bottom bolts off of the Timming Belt Cover... just to save you some hard times when you get there...

any new developments? my car too has a tick, but it only happens when the motor throttles down. so if i rev it, it goes braaaaaaaaaapssssskkakakakaakakakakaaaaarrrbbb. it sounds not as bad as yours but it still ticks in general and i think it might be similar to yours.

however mine is a constantly occuring thing except for when it idles....

Got my motor apart...Bent 3 rods in 2 directions and a piece of the main bearing welded to the crank. Nice! The weird part is that I heard what sounded like a rod knock. It wasn't exactly a typical rod knock though. Since the rods bent in two different directions...The rods were actually hitting the counterweights on the crankshaft. All is well now though because I can save the crank. So Im going forged with 3 angle valve job, balanced crank, all new motor mounts and boltin on a ported 626 manifold as well.

Driver X....The sound clip you posted sounded almost exactly like mine.

very nice, well not really, but the going forged part is only it's a long drawn process, at leat it is for me... I just got my rods yesterday, but I still need pistons, need to get the block to a shop and have it bored .20 over, and get the crank balanced along with the new internals... only problem is the only place I can find in town to bore out a motor is wanting 100 a cyliner... screw that, but hes got a name to back up the prices...

Guys Dont tell me that!!!! That is not what I want to Hear!!!! If this is true, i'm screwed!!! Its going to cost a lot to get it fixed!!! (not your typical brake down motor and rebuild guy) I dont mess with internals at all....too critical.

Shawn89255:
Since you broke down our motor, was it hard to remove the timing cover? I bet you removed the valve cover first so it didnt matter to you?? Anyhow I'm still hoping that its something small....(key word..HOPING) Thanks for all the input from you guys.

PS..... Its taking me so long to figure this out because I've been out of town and in the Hospital for surgery...so once all is well, more attention will be put toward this....

hey man, you dont need to take your valve cover off to get the timing cover off... but you will need ot take the passenger motor mount off... and quite honestly it is going to be difficult... theres just no space on that side of the motor... but howd your surgery go? hope everything is well.

Surgery was fine, I just can do anything that requires me to do physcal strain till after I see that dr. next week!! It sucks being home for a week and cant do anything that needs to be done... oh wel gotta get well first.... IF I was to remove the passenger fender wheel lining would help me see more or get more access?
