Thoughts on 16 vs 17

Lmao, dude I have an Evo. Say no more.

Honestly, I'm not impressed. An old friend of mine has been into Mitsubishi turbo cars forever, going back to the Conquest TSI and they have always been a shining example of what I don't like about old school turbos. And he’s blown two of them up. FWIW, a coworker just brought a Skyline here from Canada and was all excited to show it off to a couple of us, but meh, I don't get the appeal of that car either. You couldn’t pay me to own either car. Well, maybe for autocross only. I guess we're on different wavelengths.

Auto cross only, huh. What the hell you think I bought it for?!?

The comment that people with a year or two old CX-5 don't need to rush out and buy this is also related to his high regard for the current CX-5. The CX-5 came out in 2013. This is year 2017. The 2019-2020 most likely will have the power-train updates. I bet the 3 and 6 will get them first.

The next lot of engines coming are Homogeneous charge compression ignition, or HCCI. Since the 3 and 6 are due for an all new model, chances are they will get it first then the CX-5

I'll make a go pro video once the 17 gets here. Sport mode gives me the additional "oompf" when I need it, at least it did in my '16 CX-5

Correct as it holds the revs in the spot where the power and torque is at its peak as well as sharpening throttle response and the auto.

8.5 inch ground clearance on FWD models is a weird decision - maybe to save cost or something. AWD seems better at highway speeds - in terms of power and also fuel efficiency but the FWD 16 - is tall and just has no power above 75-80 when loaded with 2+ adults.
I just run 37 psi which is 3 more than recommended- guess the truthiness of the throttle response under 60mph is just not available at 80. Embarrassed when on highway had my foot all the way down - the speedo moved from 80-85 in like 15 seconds. The ES300H behind me overtook me from right lane. - This was in a car with wife and kid and no significant luggage < 25 lbs.

I can understand what finch is saying - but 17 will resolve this issue to an extent. 16 FWD should have been 8" ground clearance max. CX-5 gets murdered on Texas highways - I took a highlander towards NM on I-20 and it just rode 85 mph all the way - Dont think CX-5 can do that - Touring is an odd trim name since Touring itself means vehicle built for looong distances. CX-5 trims should be called City / City + / City ++

Speak for yourself. My Touring has done many long distance multi-state roadtrips going 100+ MPH in some stretches (think I-80 in Wyoming). 85+ MPH in most others. I have to watch myself to slow it down at times.

Unless you're just saying that's a FWD thing. Mines AWD.

Yeah... I definitely had a thing for the Starion in the day.

For what it's worth AWD only kicks in when slip detected otherwise it's FWD

I think it kicks in more often than that, being predictive in nature. Also if your wipers are on, etc. Probably accounts for a few MPGs versus its competitors. But I'm okay with that from a safety perspective.

Yeah it's good

I think drivers on the autobahn or in Germany in general, are more lenient than drivers in Texas. I mean have you tried driving in Houston? LOL. In Houston, you've got to be decisive or you are not going to be able to switch lanes to get off the highway. You could slow down, but there's no guarantee the car behind you will give you the lane. This is less an issue driving in Dallas but I still want that extra power for when I need it. I also somewhat consider it a safety issue. If I'm passing an 18 wheeler, the less amount of time I spend beside it while passing, the safer I will be.

I do think for 90% of my driving, the car has adequate amount of power. Once it's going, it is adequate. I think part of the issue is that it needs more power to go from cruising to brisk acceleration. Like it needs more power to overcome the inertia of cruising. In its defense, other mainstream CUVs aren't any better really and most are even less responsive than the CX-5 when it comes to 70 mph highway passing power. Other than the Forester 2.0 XT or Escape with high power ecoboost engine that is.

Night and day difference in Houston and Dallas. Houston reminds me of Miami, where I used to live, where 3 cars take a left through the red light and no one is happy until they have ridden out the merge lane until the very end or cut someone off. You have to be decisive. You're right. And aggressive. I can pass drivers all day in Dallas because they tend to be on the SLOW side. The downside of Dallas is that three cars will go exactly the same speed side-by-side in three lanes (usually under the speed limit) so you can't pass. It's like no one has anywhere to go, at least not on time. I had an Audi S5 and could never use all the power. The CX-5 should be just fine.
