Third gear blown?

So did I. Just ordered a used one from an 03 Protege. :) I still want the limited slip though...

List of stuff for me to buy (please suggest anything else I might need).
-Quaife LSD - P/N ???
-Other Quaife related hardware???
-Speedo gear? Which?
-Tranny axle seals
-Redline Shockproof(?) trans fluid
-Maybe a different clutch if someone offers to buy my Spec 6 puck?

I listed all parts other than the quaife in a few places... they are keyworded so you can find them easy...b ut since I'm at work i don't have time to search completely....

I personally don't feel it is lubrication, but I have NOT inspected a failed tranny in person... so I'm at a disadvantage there..

From some of my other discussions with people from other countries (australia, and PR, etc) I believe there are some steps we can do to take care of things..

Dana, you can go quaife if you want to, but a welded MSP LSD is a lot cheaper (read about 550 total with welding) and has yet to pop in anyone's car.

Ok, I'll look them up tonight.

Cool.

The welded MSP LSD IS tempting for that price, but i heard that the new ones don't grip as well as the OEM Mazda ones?

Anyway, my plan for right now is to...
1-Pull the "old" trans this weekend
2-Install the "new" trans next week when it comes in
3-Take my time and rebuild/beef up/put an LSD in the "old" trans
4-Swap the beefed up "old" trans for my "new" trans

I haven't had any complaints at all with my "new" msp LSD... but your plan looks good.. it's the beef up/rebuild that will be the hard/confusing part.

Dana, did you get Aric's fax? We spoke with a Master Tech and he gave us the rundown on what you'll need from his own experience with the trans. Protege trannies go alot more than people think.

dood! im sorry to hear about this...

try to find out if the tranny was from a protege with abs or not? also your mp3 didnt come with abs? right?

reason im bring this up is... a tranny's that came out of protege WITH abs uses the abs system sensor to calculate speed or MPH.
a tranny out of a non-abs equip protege uses a gear driven speed sensor.

i had this problem with my msp lsd tranny... the msp tranny was ABS driven and my protege5 didnt come with ABS factory. everything else worked fine... i just didnt rack up miles or know how fast i was going. lol

Bah! Dana, I guess we're working on your tranny this Sunday, eh? hehe. Cant make it Saturday. Actually I can, but it will probably be in the evening. I can probably be over your house around 8 maybe 9pm on Saturday.

Yup, I got it. Now I just have to drop that trans and pull it apart to see which of those parts broke.

Oh crap, I totally forgot about that. There will be a difference in the speed sensor or something, right?

also your mp3 didnt come with abs? right?

Correct.

Haha, so is there a fix to this?

Ok, Cool, keep in touch.

you should be able to swap exterior cases for that issue (speedo sensor)... but I don't know... I haven't dealt with that one yet!

I dont know if that was sarcasm or not, but yes all you do is swap a few parts over from your old tranny and get a new spedo gear... put it on the center section (or LSD if applicable) and voila!

but is the case tapped to accept the speedo sensor itself on the outside? That would be my concern. Getting the speedo gear is a known thing... but not having a sender unit is the biggest issue I think.

yes, you could press in your pink gear from your old mp3 tranny in to the new tranny you find(if the new tranny dosent have the pink gear already)......
if you plan on pulling a part the diff anyways to due a lsd this would be the perfect time.

http://protege5.ugly.net/05-15B.PDF page 4, see the sensor plug? (its numbered "1")

iirc the cases themselves are the same.

yes, correct. both tranny cases are the same....

funny thing is the msp tranny had the speed sensor just like my p5 tranny(plug with wiring running to it and everything) when i did the swap everything looked the same untill i pulled the msp speed sensor and saw it was a ''dummy" sensor with nothing on the bottom side (no gear ect..). i was like WTF??? lol

Ok, wait...

So if It's non-ABS, it's plug and play.

If it IS ABS, then I will need to pull apart the trans and insert a pink gear?

Use the gear off the old one.
